Another’s Ignorance

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about a time when you were hurt by another person’s ignorance. Was this hurt physically or emotionally? How did their ignorance lead to you getting hurt? Was this other person aware that they hurt you? Did you do anything in response to them? If so, how do you feel about the way you reacted? Could you have handled the situation in a different way?

Rapping about Wrapping

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’m obsessed with this song that I found recently. It has a powerful message of self-empowerment and female empowerment. Check out Hijabi by Mona Haydar and listen to the lyrics about how this woman shows her strength through her clothing. I like that while the song deals with the specific issues that women wearing this style of head garment encounter she still is inclusive of all women in her song’s message. Write a scene in which your character uses what makes her seem different from a crowd to empower herself. Be it a difference in beliefs, gender, fashion choice, religion, or even a combination of them.

You’re Gorgeous! I Love You!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem that is meant to remind someone you care about of how beautiful they are. Is this person in need of the reminder? Do you just like to tell them because you think they should know? What kind of beauty do you appreciate about this person? What is your relationship to the person? What makes them worth while for this poem over any other person in your life?

Internet Inspiration: Legends Never Quit

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found this set of images that collect the struggle of people who are now very successful in their chosen career paths. Some of them had much darker pasts than I was aware of. But as sad as it is that each of them went through these hardships they are all powerful motivational figures now. Check out the images below to see the struggle that came before success for each of these famous figures. Write a character like these people that had to struggle for years before succeeding. How does your protagonist relate to this character? Does your protagonist ever get the chance to meet this person?

Poetic Forms: The Haibun

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The haibun is a Japanese form of poetry popularized by Matsuo Basho. It is prose (or a prose poem) combined with one or more haiku. Most commonly only one haiku is included, placed after the prose, and serving as a climax or epiphany to what came before. These two pieces should work together, playing off one another. One can be an explanation for the other if you like. I’m sure there are other ways you can find to link them together. Have fun with it.

Contrary Character

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I finished Catch 22 this week and can’t say that I was a fan. But at least I can feel confident in saying I don’t think I will find a group of characters that contradict each other and themselves nearly as much as this group does. Write a scene where your character encounters someone that contradicts everything to the point of being nonsensical. Is the character insane or trying to make it seem like they are for some reason?

Drinking Out Of Art

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

For once, I’ve found an Etsy product that isn’t too expensive! These custom growlers are from an Etsy page for Sigil and Growler. I’m not really a beer drinker personally, but if I saw these bottles in the store, I’d buy them for the beer drinkers in my life with the caveat that they had to return the bottle to me after it’s empty. My favorites are the tarot card designs. I’m already imagining a scene where drinking from the different tarot card beers would allow you to see the future. Write a scene where your character finds unexpected beauty in a bar. Does your character enjoy drinking or does she find this beauty despite not really caring for her surroundings?

Feeling Ripped Off

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I had the urge to listen to a song by Garth Brooks last night and surprisingly YouTube failed to find me the original version. It was all covers. So I tried doing a google search for the song and found that Amazon Prime said it had the song. As someone that pays for Amazon Prime, I was excited. But when I clicked the link it turned out that this was one of those stupid up charges Amazon has been doing more and more of lately. The song was only available via Amazon Music Unlimited. To me, it feels like a rip off to make people pay and extra $10 a month for extra services when they are already “Prime” users. Take inspiration from my venting here and write a poem about a situation that feels you’re being ripped off.

Bringing New Experiences

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Miley Cyrus released a video for her new song Malibu last week. Her music has always been a little hit or miss for me. This time around I’m not impressed, to be honest. It is a sweet love song, but there’s nothing that hooked me in it. Still, the lyrics talk about the love interest introducing her to new things. I think that this is something that we should always look forward to when bringing new people into our lives. Write a scene about the pleasant new experiences that your character has when she brings a new person into her life.

The Joys and Horrors of Flirting

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

When you’re flirting with someone, what kind of feelings do you get? Are you the type of person that flirts with confidence? Do you know when you’re on your game and really making a good impression? Or are you the type of person that feels anxious every time you attempt to flirt with someone? Are you unsure of everything that you say to the person you’re interested in? Write a poem that captures the feelings you experience while flirting and makes your reader see why you love or hate it?
