Design of a Garden

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I came across a post that compiled a truly beautiful collection of gardens. I’m in love with every one of these photos. The thing that I admire is how the plant life and the architecture work together in these cases. Write a scene that has detailed descriptions of plants and architecture in that fit beautifully combination with each other. How does nature compliment the building it surrounds in this scene? Do the plants serve any sort of function beyond aesthetic? For example, the tree in the second image is support for the deck we see there.

Physical Nerves

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I woke up with this “I Feel The Earth Move” by Carole King stuck in my head. I’ve never really felt this nervous about another person myself but I think it’s an interesting level of feeling that you can use for a character. Write about someone who makes your character feel such strong emotions that they are physically nervous. Are they feelings of affection like in the song or does your character feel something else so strongly. Perhaps he’s so angry he’s shaking with it.

The Mistake In Love

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve got Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” stuck in my head. This is one of those songs that I hadn’t thought too much about the lyrics despite having heard it hundreds of times. I’ve even sung along with absent-mindedly. But till it gets stuck in my head the lyrics don’t always stand out. The first part of the song the singer admits that loving this person isn’t the right thing to do. Write a scene where your character has loving feelings that they shouldn’t. Why is it a mistake to feel this way?

Internet Inspiration: Cat Antics

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I came across a post on Tumblr that was a collection of pictures of cats sitting in boxes that had “Fort Asshole” written on the side. My favorite of these pictures is below. No doubt if you’ve spent any extended period of time on the internet you’ve seen some funny cat pictures or videos. Take inspiration from the internet’s love for cats and write a scene that includes some sort of cat antics.

Infinite Improbability

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is probably one of the more challenging reads I’ve taken on recently. The biggest reason for this is the Infinite Improbability Drive. As a concept it is so limitless that it’s bound to bring some weird stuff into the story. This is on top of the originality that comes with writing a story in space full of aliens, robots, and a guidebook that is constantly updating. Take inspiration from the idea of the Infinite Improbability Drive and write a scene in which something so improbable as to almost be impossible happens.

New Characters, Same World

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The most anticipate movie of the year for me is coming out today! As any of you that have been following me for a while know I’m a big fan of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. When I first heard that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be a movie I wondered how? After all the original book is simply a text book and has no storyline. But I should have known that with her intricate world building Rowling has spent a lot of time thinking about Newt Scamander and the adventures he went on to write the text book. Inspired by Fantastic Beasts, write a new adventure in an existing world of your own making that revolves around a new character. How far removed is this character from your original protagonist of this world? Does this new story happen in a different time or place than the original story?

Winter Work Out Layers

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So if you’re new to running in cold weather it can be hard to decide how many layers to wear. Once you’ve actually started running you don’t want to have to stop to take off layers because you’re getting to hot. I found this useful infograph that breaks down the layers based on the temperature. Write a scene in which your character hasn’t worn the right amount of layers for a given situation. How does he deal with his discomfort? Is he risking his health at all?

The Last Supper

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” is so well-known and so popular that a google image search of it brings up more remakes and copies of the work than images of the original. The image is iconic enough that artists are drawn to it and try to recreate it in many ways and even with different characters. The concept itself is one that we can use as writers too. The last gathering of a group of characters before one of them dies or simply before some life changing event happens. Write your own last supper scene. Do your characters know that such a big change is coming? If so, how does it affect their interactions? If not, how will this coming event change things between them? Is this truly the last supper for one of them? Or the last time this group will be all together?

Things We Can’t Lose

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

“The Ballad of Serenity” is probably my favorite tv show theme song ever. The message of hope that no matter what happens they can’t take the sky from the singer is a powerful one for me. We all go through loss but that makes the hope that much more important. Write a scene about the one thing that your character can’t lose that gives him hope. What has your character lost or what has been taken from him that makes this hope more important?

Internet Inspiration: Casting Different Shadows

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found this picture online and I’m not sure if it is a trick of the lettering or if it was just digitally altered. Either way I like this idea of the shadow that is cast not being the one that’s expected. Write a scene that features this effect. Is it something like the picture that could believably be the way the glass and letters were made? Or is it something more magic, like a monster shaped shadow where a small child’s shadow should be?
