Desert Desserts

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It is a fairly common occurrence for me to find pictures of food pretty but it is a much less common occurrence that I find a food so pretty that I’ll share it as a piece of art on here. These cakes are designed by Iven Kawiby to look like terrariums full of succulents and other desert flowers. Over the past couple of years I’ve seen a lot of friends get into succulents and grown to appreciate their beauty myself but using that aesthetic on these cakes really does look like art to me. Write a scene in which your character encounters a dish that looks more like art than food. How much work went into this dish? Did the person eating it appreciate the artistry of it?

Intricately Laser Carvings

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

My expensive tastes on Etsy have struck again! I found these gorgeous laser cut wood designs made by Dan Schaub Designs. My magical fantasy imagination can see these as intricate puzzle seals that your characters have to shift around till they unlock the seals and gain access to some hidden room. I think that the light up one in particular had a helping hand in creating this fantasy scenario in my mind. What do these carvings inspire for you. Write a scene that features a carving like one of these.

Spirits From The Sea

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The picture below features Black Ghost aka Juodasis Vaiduoklis; it is a bronze sculpture sculpted by Svajunas Jurkus and Sergejus Plotnikovas located at the port of Klaipėda, Lithuania. This sculptures seems to scream write a story about me. Bring me to life in a twisted horror about the sea. And today we will answer that call. Write a scene that features a legend of spirits that are linked to the sea somehow. Are these spirits real in your character’s world or is it just a story? What occasion prompts these stories to be told? Is your character visiting an area close to the sea that draws much of its culture and activity from the water?

Reflections of Architecture

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The picture below are from The Vanishing Stepwells of India: A New Book by Victoria Lautman Documents the Fading Relics of Subterranean Wells. I love the architecture of these stepwalls so much. But I’m particularly interested in the reflections of the architecture that the water causes. I think that they would make for an excellent exercise in detailed description. Write a scene of your character observing something of intricate design being reflected in water. Does the water stay still or does it move causing the architecture’s design to do other interesting things in the reflection?

Another World In My Bedroom

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Vienna, Austria-based artist Bogi Fabian uses glow-in-the-dark and black light-reactive paints to transform rooms. Some of the rooms she designs to look completely plain with the lights on while others are already decorated but then enhanced further when the lights go out. My Science Fiction/Fantasy obsessed side wouldn’t let me pass up showing you all this artist. This work makes me think of a magical room that is able to transport characters to different worlds. Let Bogi Fabian’s work inspire you. What kind of scene magical or otherwise do these rooms make you think of?

The Trees Are Walking

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

This tree costume seen at the Llano Earth Art Festival is one of the best costumes I’ve come across in my life. I would totally be putting money in those tip jars too. I could easily see this costume blending into an actual wooded area. I love the idea of trees that take on human qualities for a fantasy story and this is an excellent visual to inspire such a story. So fantasy writers you already know what I’m going to say. Write a scene that includes a tree that has human qualities. For all of you that aren’t about the fantasy life, write a scene where your character needs to hide among trees. Does she have time to camouflage at all?

Intricate Light Patterns

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

As I’m sure many of you have come to know, I have expensive taste. I don’t even mean to but somehow whenever “I think oh that’s pretty” you can bet it’s gonna hurt your wallet. These lamps are no different. They are absolutely gorgeous with the intricate patterns that have been cut into their wood frames but I won’t be able to afford them any time soon. Still that level of detail deserves to be admired. Write a scene that features one of these lamps or something of equally intricate detailing.

Does Your Character Measure Up?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Roman Ondak’s Measuring the Universe at Tate St Ives has grown through the contribution of around 90,000 participants to a constellation of black marks. It’s a pretty cool idea for an interactive art piece that can pretty much grow endlessly. I’ve always liked those moments when you notice little markers that show a character’s physical growth through their childhood. This art piece reminds me a bit of that concept of course. So today write a scene that features height markings like these. Do they belong to your protagonist or someone else that she knows? What memories or thoughts do these markings provoke?

The Shape of a Virus

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Luke Jerram makes exact glass replicas of harmful viruses. Each replica is 1,000,000 times the size of the actual virus. Some of the viruses he replicated are swine flu, HIV, T4 bacteriophage, malaria, small pox, SARS, HPV & E. Coli. It’s interesting to see how complex something as small as a virus can be. Also it’s impressive as hell to see these complicated shapes made out of glass. Write a scene that infects one of your characters with a virus of your choosing.

We’re Made Of The Books We Love

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Dana Albany, a “book sculptor,” creates a massive sculpture composed of out-of-date textbooks and discarded library books. She names this giant figure: Body of Knowledge. I love the idea that these books got to be used one more time after they were considered no longer useful for their original purpose. The idea that people are shaped by the stories we hear is one I hold dear to my heart. Write a scene that shows what stories helped to form your character’s ideas of what love is.
