Nothing But A Hound Dog

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I had no idea that before Elvis took on the song as his own “Hound Dog” was actually recorded by singer/songwriter Willie Mae ‘Big Mama’ Thornton. Her original version was recorded in 1952. I love learning things about musical history. Though it does make me a little sad when artist like this don’t get credit because their version isn’t the “popular” version. Write a scene where your character gets overlooked for an accomplishment only to have someone else do the same thing and receive praise. Why was your character ignored while this other person gets attention? How is their work different? How are they different?

Hints and Innuendos

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I don’t know about everyone else but I was disappointed in what Disney was calling gay representation in the live action Beauty and the Beast movie. This version of Gaston sang during a Broadway Villains Party was a much more satisfying version. The use of innuendo is far more entertaining here up until they just let the joke slip and flat out call the characters gay.  Write a scene where your character makes use of innuendos while interacting with someone. Is your character being subtle or obvious? What is the purpose of the innuendos in this scene?

Does It Really Make You Happy?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

For whatever reason the jukebox in my head has decided that the song of the week is “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow. The song itself does make me happy which is nice since I can’t get it out of my head. But the lyrics “If it makes you happy then why the hell are you so sad” definitely leave us with plenty to play with in our writing. This could be something that used to make the character happy but has lost its joy recently; why does your character still cling to it? Does she keep telling herself that it makes her happy because she is just used to saying so? Or maybe this is the sort of sad happiness that we like because it makes us glad just remember that we aren’t feeling that sadness all the time. Like when we watch a tragedy and think about how much better our life is than that. We’re sad but happy at the same time. Write a scene that plays with the idea of mixing happiness and sadness.

The Only Way We Know How

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The wardrobe choice for this music video is a bit of a weird one but I’m sure the producers had a vision in mind when they made it. More interesting though is the lyrics. In two verses of the song we have a count down from 25 as the first line of each line but we never actually make it down to 1. The part I liked about this song is the line from the chorus “Cause living out loud is the only way I know how.” I like the idea of only knowing one way to live. As we all know there are a lot of ways to live life. But think about what way is the only acceptable way for your character to live her life. Have people present her with opportunities or situations that challenge her way of living.

Drawing Strength From Others

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” has been stuck in my head all morning. I have no idea where it came from but at least it is one of the better songs to get stuck in my head lately. I’m sure that you’ve all heard a version of it at some point in your lives as it has been remade a lot but nothing quite lives up to the King version for me. Take inspiration from the lyrics of this song and write about a character that draws her strength from others. Is this in a metaphoric sense like knowing that people believe in her helps her to keep pursuing her goals? Or are you going for a more literal sense like magically drawing strength out of another character in some way? What is the connection between your character and the person she draws her strength from?

Ridiculous Laws

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Wet Spots is a rather entertaining duo that sings songs that have adult themes. The one I’ve posted below is called “Texas Annie” and it is about a woman that smuggles dildos into Texas because up until recently it was illegal to buy dildos there. To most of us who mind our business this probably seems like a ridiculous law. Write a scene about a law your character finds ridiculous or the interpretation of a law that makes it seem ridiculous.

Friendly Competition

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I just came across this video while I was watching some of Neil Patrick Harris’s other performances and I couldn’t help but want to share it. As a guest on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris challenges James Corden to a Broadway Riff-Off. A friendly competition where the winner is all of us that watched and enjoyed. Take inspiration from these two talented actors and put your character in a friendly competition. Who is your character competing with? What are they competing over? Which competitor will win?

“Brand New Sounds In My Mind”

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Lorde is back with a new single! Last Thursday the video for “Green Light” hit YouTube. It’s a pretty good song I can definitely see myself dancing to it. I stole my favorite line of the song for the title of this prompt. She sings “I hear sounds in my head. Brand new sounds in my head.” As I’ve probably said on here before I’m fascinated with the minds of musicians and how they can imagine entire compositions in their heads. What does this line from “Green Light” inspire in your head? There are all sorts of ways my mind can interpret the line. Write a scene about someone who is hearing new sounds that no one else is hearing.

Songs of Stress Relief

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So according to a few sources, including a Huffington Post article, the song “Weightless” by Marconi Union is scientifically proven to reduce stress. It is apparently so effective that it’s dangerous to drive while listening to it because it can make you drowsy. Any of you that have trouble sleeping should give it a try to see if the scientist know what they’re talking about. Whether it works as well as they claim or not, I can totally believe the concept of using music to reduce or relieve stress. Write a scene about your character doing exactly that. Does the song your character use feel like one of meditation like this one or is it something less calming but just as stress relieving?

Wired In

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

A friend of mine just introduced me to a new artist called Aurora. She’s pretty interesting. My freind describes her as if Florence and the Machines and Sia merged into one artist. I can see what she means. I’m only a few songs into her discography but this video was particularly interesting to me. “Running With The Wolves” features the singer connected to a bunch off wires and trying to run from a city. The wires kind of have a Matrix feel to them. Take inspiration from this video and imagine a future that would conncet people to wires like this. Is it all people that are wired in? Or is it just a select few? If it’s the latter, what makes these people special?
