Tech Suits

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I saw a video while I was scrolling of a robot-looking armor that someone had made and it made me wonder what else was out there in the way of robot suits. Some of these robotic “exoskeletons” are being created to assist people with disabilities, some of them are also made for combat, and some are created for construction and other utilitarian purposes. None of them are at that comic book/science fiction level that we are used to imagining but they are all stepping-stones towards those futuristic devices. Write a scene that includes some kind of technological armor or suit. What is the intended purpose for your technology in the scene? Can it be used outside it’s intended purpose?

Sporty Socks

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Swiss Barefoot Company created a sock that is the closest we’ve gotten to doing sports barefoot while still being safe. The creator loved to go out barefoot but often found his feet getting hurt along the way. The FYF sock is the solution that was created. These seem pretty cool if they genuinely make your feet feel as free as they advertise. Inspired by this sock’s creator, write about a character that would prefer to go everywhere barefoot.

Gardening Fashion

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Okay I’ll admit this item isn’t at all going to be considered fashionable but it’s a pretty cool accessory all the same. And it’s the most reasonably priced thing that I’ve ever found on Oddity Mall. Pretty much any time you see a character gardening in a television show they’re wearing gloves. This is clearly for practical purposes as you want to protect your hands. I know what you’re thinking “Duh!” But these gardening gloves have the added feature of build-in claws to help you dig and otherwise get down and dirty with your garden. Plus you can feel a little like a super hero with claw gloves. Write a scene that features your characters in a garden. Is your character good at growing things? Is she knowledgable about plants? Or is gardening something that she can’t quite get into for one reason or another?

Yoga Warriors

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Lorica Clothing successfully received funding for historically accurate leggings on Kickstarter. In just a few more hours the time to submit funds will be over. The leggings’ inspiration is straight out of the Metropolitan Museum’s Arms and Armor exhibit. I’ve posted some pictures below of the leggings; follow the link above to see more. This is such a cool concept that combines the clothing of two completely different time periods. Think of a way that you can embrace this idea in your writing. Write a scene where your character combines things from different time periods to accomplish her goal.

Cumbersome Accessories

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

When I saw this bracelet all I could think was “Why?” Personally I don’t think that it looks very good but that isn’t really the issue. The issue I feel is that this bracelet would ultimately be more cumbersome than its worth. I can only imagine that it would constantly require adjusting. Whether you agree with me or not about this bracelet, write a scene that features some accessories that end up being cumbersome for the wearer. Why did your characters start wearing the accessories in the first place? Did they like the way the accessories looked or are they trying to be fashionable despite not caring for the item?

Religious Attire

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I was thinking about the fashion of religion today. In most everything that I can think of off the top of my head there is a sort of uniform that distinguishes religious leaders from those they lead. Whether it is the robes of any type of monk (they always seem to be in robes), the nun’s habit, the clerical collar of Catholic priests, or kittel is a white knee-length cotton robe worn by Jewish prayer leaders. (Wikipedia source because I’m not very familiar with Jewish culture.) I’m sure that it is all meant to help the religious leader be more visible for their flock. (I think that’s the term?) Still there seems to be a pattern that the jobs come with a certain fashion. Write a scene that includes the description of the clothing of a religious leader. This could be really fun to invent if you are inventing the religions for your world as well.

Fancy Up Your Shoulders A Bit

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

These bridal accessories are a gorgeous addition to strapless wedding dresses. Blair Nadeau Millinery makes all kinds of wedding accessories but these shoulder pieces are my favorite items in the collection. Check out the etsy shop and create a custom wedding dress for one of your characters inspired by all the beautiful items you see. Write out the wedding scene. What is your protagonist doing at the wedding? Is she a guest, part of the wedding party, or even the bride?

Children Dressing Themselves

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So I happened to catch an episode of Boy Meets World where the comment is made that they let Morgan (this is while she’s still in the 5 or under age range) dress herself. I’ve always thought this was a cool idea on the parents part. Think about some of the first outfits that your character picked out for herself. Where they when she was a child and felt the freedom to combine whatever she wanted? If so write about those outfits. or write a scene about someone else’s child dressing herself. Or lastly your character dressing herself in the way a child would with a sense that combines whimsy and comfort.

Deck The Halls With Jewelry

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve posted a few jewelry organizers that double as decorations on here before. These jewelry organizers by Fine Art Holders on Etsy are joining the collection today. Some of them look like you could achieve a similar effect by repurposed old drawers from dressers if you wanted a diy project. I think that the pictures of fabulous women on each one is a particularly nice touch. Inspired by these organizers work in some decorative storage into a room description in a scene today.

Referential Ties

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

There is a lot of fun stuff to be found on Binary Winter Press but my favorite items were the ties. Check out the link above to see more of these cool tie designs as well as other fun clothing from this shop. Write a scene where your character wears something that, like these ties, is referential to something she loves. How many people get the reference? Does their shared knowledge of this reference lead to positive or negative interactions?
