Act Now and Get This Brand New Pair of Legs!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I know that normal I post publication opportunities on Saturdays but I saw this thing online that was too cool to not post. Hugh Herr had a Ted Talk last year about his work on the next generation of prosthetics. Just seeing the gif set of the video was amazing and I’m sure will inspire you to watch the full Ted Talk. It’s like we’re inching closer and closer to the replacement hands that half the Star Wars characters are walking around with. Write a scene that features a character who’s life could be changed by this technology.

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

As you’ve probably figured out from the lack of posts I’ve been busy with holiday stuff. So I’m calling this my official winter hibernation. Not to worry BTs, I’ll be back with more writing prompts and tips here, on my Tumblr, and on my twitter in January. I hope you all have a happy holiday season.

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Today’s call is for Fiction Fix! They are currently accepting submissions up until October 31st. Both fiction and poetry are being accepted and they will take up to two works per author at a time. They have not listed any price to submit so I’m under the impression that this is another freebie BTs! There are a few more specific guidelines regarding length on their submission page. Brushing Before Bed

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write about the end of the day routine for your character? In what ways is it similar to the beginning of the day routine? In what ways are they different? What time does you character’s day usually end? Does your character even have a routine or is the end of every day different?

Writing Believable Diseases

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So it seems like cancer is the “it” topic in Hollywood. With The Fault In Our Stars, Chasing Life, and Red Band Society all making cancer the “it” disease. I saw TFIOS and appreciated that it kept things real with the disease but watching the trailer for Chasing Life I don’t completely believe that they are going to capture the darkness of living with this disease. I’m not sure that Red Band will get to capture the darkness either but it certainly looks closer than Chasing Life. Today write a scene that captures the darkness of a disease that you are familiar with. Let it scare you, depress you, piss you off, or whatever. Get it to feel as authentic as possible.

“Let Me Borrow That Top!”

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So I found this cool guide to different types of tops. It’s pretty cool or at least I think so. Each shirt has a visual, title, and description. Never fail to describe your character’s top again!

It’s Time to Grow Up Guys

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a scene about the first moment that your character realized what it means to be an adult. When did your character start paying all the bills? Did your character ever have to take care of someone else? Or is your character only responsible for good old numero uno? How long has your character taken care of everything? Does someone else take care of your character? Will someone else always be taking care of your character? Will this character never grow up?

Giant Abstract Monsters are Real

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Someone online described these art pieces as giant abstract monsters and I’m still not completely sure that these things aren’t powered by magic. Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest: Wind Powered Kinetic Sculptures are mind-blowing. You know how there are those things that you just have to see to believer these sculptures fall into that category for me. I’m sure an engineer could watch these things for a few minutes and tell us all exactly how they work but I sort of like the idea of them being a little mysterious to me. Write a scene about something that your character wouldn’t believe unless he saw it. Let them guess at how the thing works. I’ll leave it up to you whether or not they actually learn the mysteries of this unbelievable object.

Pranking Your Characters

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a scene that involves your characters pulling pranks. Are they pulling pranks on each other? Are they joining forces to pull pranks on other people? Are these pranks potentially dangerous? Does someone take the pranking too far? What could happen if a prank does go wrong? Is the prank that is being pulled traditional like a senior prank in high school or something else of that nature? How long did it take to plan it all?

Arrival By Helicopter Because We’re Awesome

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So it could just be my obsession with Nicki Minaj but I love the helicopter arrival part of this video. Write your own scene that features a helicopter arrival. Does the person seem more important, powerful, or glamorous because of this somewhat unique way to show up? Or is your character unimpressed with this and finds it all a little over done? What would be a more impressive arrival scene in your character’s eye?
