Believe What You Want

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I just finished reading H.G. Wells The Time Machine. I was familiar with the basic concept and elements of the story from having seen movies based on the book but as with most instance the book and movies are a bit different. The part of the story that most of us can probably relate to is the Time Traveler’s desire to tell his story. He genuinely doesn’t seem to care if they actually believe him but he wants to tell them the story anyway. Write a scene in which your character doesn’t care whether or not she’s believe but is relieved to be able to tell a story. What makes the story unbelievable? How long has your character felt the need to tell this story to someone? Did she wait for a specific person to tell it to or has she told many people because she wants to spread the story.

Slipping Responsibilities

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

A couple of days last week posting my daily writing inspirations slipped by me. I try to stay ahead of things so that doesn’t happen but life can be unexpected sometimes. Sometimes responsibilities even ones that we’ve only made up for ourselves can be forgotten as we let other things get in the way. Write a poem about some responsibilities that have slipped by you in times of stress or other distractions. What were the consequences? How did you feel when you realized that you’d missed them.

Childhood Heroes

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve been pretty excited about the Power Rangers Movie since I heard that Elizabeth Banks was going to play Rita Repulsa. This was probably my very first “favorite television show” when I was a little kid. The blue ranger was always my favorite in case you were wondering. But I’m so glad that one of the remakes from my childhood is actually getting good reviews. So few of the remakes we’ve been seeing of the last few years have lived up to the original. Think about who your character’s heroes were when she was a child. What made them a hero to her back then? What qualities does she share with the hero once she becomes an adult?

Looking Forward to Change

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

All of our lives change as we go through them. There’s an old phrase that goes something like “change is the only constant.” The only question is whether it will be a change for the better or not. Write a poem about a change you knew was coming and that you looked forward to. Did it live up to your expectations? How long did you anticipate this change? Was it a change you made happen or one that happened naturally?

Yoga Warriors

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Lorica Clothing successfully received funding for historically accurate leggings on Kickstarter. In just a few more hours the time to submit funds will be over. The leggings’ inspiration is straight out of the Metropolitan Museum’s Arms and Armor exhibit. I’ve posted some pictures below of the leggings; follow the link above to see more. This is such a cool concept that combines the clothing of two completely different time periods. Think of a way that you can embrace this idea in your writing. Write a scene where your character combines things from different time periods to accomplish her goal.

Words Spoken And Lost

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

As I mentioned on one of my Tumblr posts earlier this week I’ve been dog sitting for some friends. I find myself talking to the dog much more than I talk to my cats. Not in a useful way like giving her the commands that I know she understands but more uselessly in a casual manner. She has no idea what I’m saying the words are basically all lost in a void of space between us. Write a poem about words being spoken but lost. What is the cause of your words being lost?

Reflections of Architecture

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The picture below are from The Vanishing Stepwells of India: A New Book by Victoria Lautman Documents the Fading Relics of Subterranean Wells. I love the architecture of these stepwalls so much. But I’m particularly interested in the reflections of the architecture that the water causes. I think that they would make for an excellent exercise in detailed description. Write a scene of your character observing something of intricate design being reflected in water. Does the water stay still or does it move causing the architecture’s design to do other interesting things in the reflection?

Healthy Habits

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about a healthy habit you wish you could master but still haven’t managed to get down yet. What do you find most desirable about this habit? What obstacles have stood in your way so far? What steps are you taking to help you towards forming this habit?

Drawing Strength From Others

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” has been stuck in my head all morning. I have no idea where it came from but at least it is one of the better songs to get stuck in my head lately. I’m sure that you’ve all heard a version of it at some point in your lives as it has been remade a lot but nothing quite lives up to the King version for me. Take inspiration from the lyrics of this song and write about a character that draws her strength from others. Is this in a metaphoric sense like knowing that people believe in her helps her to keep pursuing her goals? Or are you going for a more literal sense like magically drawing strength out of another character in some way? What is the connection between your character and the person she draws her strength from?

Being Watched

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about how you feel when you are being watched. Is this something you enjoy, like an actor enjoys being watched by an audience? Or is this something that makes you nervous as you fear the scrutiny that would come with failing as they watch? Whatever feelings it provokes in you, describe a specific occasion when you found yourself being watched. What about this occasion stands out in your mind?
