Your Characters’ Resolutions

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’m not much for setting resolutions for the new year. But that doesn’t mean that my characters don’t like to set resolutions. Write resolutions for your core set of characters. Which of them will keep their resolutions? Which of them will give up? How seriously do your characters take these resolutions? How realistic are their resolutions?

Letting Things Go

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It’s the last day of 2016. Time to get ready for a new year. For most of us a new year is a symbolic new beginning. With new beginning comes the opportunity to let things go. Write a poem about something that you want to let go as you move into the new year.

Disappearing Because It Doesn’t Exist

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

BBC Radio has posed a dramatization of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. It’s only online for a limited time so move quickly on this one while it’s still available. There’s a part at the beginning where the narrator is talking about the world of Faerie and how it has grown. “Each land that has been forced off the map by explorers going out and proving it wasn’t there has taken refuge in Faerie.” I love this concept. A world where our myths go when they’ve been disproven. Take some time today to think about some things that have been proven not to exist in your character’s world. Was there a time when this thing was thought to be real by the masses? Is there a place where disproven things go in your character’s world? Write a scene where your character concerns herself with something that has been disproven.

Resolving Projects

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

With the end of the year coming up I’m wondering how many projects we all have left unfinished. How many of us has procrastination gotten the better of this year. Write a poem about any unfinished projects you have left before the new year starts.

Concepts Corporealized

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I absolutely love the concept of this movie, Collateral Beauty. In it Will Smith’s character interacts with manifestations of Love, Time, and Death. These are usually concepts that we try to give meaning to rather than physical beings that we can have conversations with. Take inspiration from this movie and write about your character talking to some higher concept like these one. Is your character speaking to a manifestation of the concept that she can see? Or is your character speaking out loud to this concept just to get the thoughts out.

Feeling Unheard

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a Poem about feeling unheard. Do you try to make yourself heard by repeating yourself or do you simply accept that you weren’t heard? How often does this happen to you? How does ut make you feel? Does it happen with a lot of people or is it specific to conversations with certain people?

Collar Connections

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Check out these collar clips by Fox And Rose Shop on Etsy. They’re an entertaining addition to the button up shirt look. Some of them are pretty clever and others are just plain cute. My favorite is the heart and the brain set. The shop also has lapel pins. Overall these items are great if you’re the type of person that likes adding a touch of whimsy to your outfit. Write a scene that features a character that likes to dress with a touch of whimsy.

Behind The Casual Answer

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It’s fairly common in social interactions that when someone asks how we are we just answer okay, good, or fine. We know this is enough and they aren’t normally looking for the real answwer anyway. Write a poem that takes one of these preset responses and breaks it down into a few different rants. Make it a four stanza poem having each stanza starting with the next letter of the world? F/I/N/E or O/K/A/Y.

We’re All Made Of Stories

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’m a firm believer in the idea that we are formed by the stories we know. These Book Sculptures by Allison Glasgow convey that idea perfectly in my opinion. Today come up with a list of stories your character has read, heard, and seen. How did these stories shape him? Why have these stories stuck with him? Will he pass these stories on to others?

The Joy of Another

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Today I celebrate the platonic love of my life coming into the world. It makes me happy just to see her and I hope that I bring the same kind of joy to her life. Write a poem about a person that always makes you happy.
