Exercise In Wish-Fulfillment

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I just finished watching Joss Whedon’s show Dollhouse again. It’s a really interesting show conceptually. It asks a lot of questions about human nature and desire. It also shows us some of the dangers of wish-fulfillment. Many of the stories that tell us to be careful what we wish for show how our wishes will hurt us. But with Dollhouse the question is also “how will your wish hurt someone else?” Write a scene in which your character wishes for something but in order to get it someone else will have to be hurt. Is your character able to live with that price? And what about the other character, the one getting hurt, what happens to him?

Protecting Yourself

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about what you do to protect yourself. What are the things you have to protect yourself from on a daily or regular basis? Are you protecting your physical body? Or are protecting your feelings? What has brought you to think that you need to protect yourself? Has previous experience brought you to think that you need this protection?

“Bow Ties Are Cool”

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Anyone that’s a Doctor Who fan probably has a special place in their heart for bow ties. These bow ties from Speicher Bow Tie Company come with especially fun patterns for those of us that love the nerdy side of pop culture. Check out the full selection at using the link above. Write a scene that includes a character who frequently wears bow ties or features an occasion to which your character would wear a bow tie.

The Myths of Poetry

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about a myth that you feel an emotional connection with. What about this myth speaks to you? Can you combine the story from the myth with stories from your personal experience? Where does the myth originate from? Is this a myth that is widely known around the world or is it a myth that is a bit more personal to a culture, family, or person you know?

Colors of the Sky

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The images below are all available on products on the Society6 page for Zandaart. There are far more than the ones here but these are my favorites. They are such gorgeous imaginings of the night sky. Take inspiration from these images and write a description of the sky that uses more than just one color. What has cause the variation of colors?

Tabula Rasa

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The phrase Tabula Rasa is Latin which translates to blank slate. Write about a the concept of a blank slate. Bonus points for using the words Tabula Rasa in the poem. Do you believe that it’s possible to get a blank slate again in this life after you’ve started it? Or do you believe that there’s no such thing as a blank slate even when we’re babies because every child is born into a set of circumstances? However you feel about the concept express it in the poem.

Healing With Music

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

IT’s a weird time to be living in Orlando. I’ve lived through personal tragedy before but I’ve never lived in the area of a community wide tragedy. Every time I’m driving to work I see reminders of the shooting at Pulse. Granted these are reminders in the form of the community coming together. Rainbow flags are flying places that they’ve never flown before, the hashtags for OrlandoStrong and OrlandoUnited are very prominent, and several buildings are still using multi-colored lights to form rainbows on their structures at night. These are beautiful displays of support for the community but we can’t help remembering why they exist upon seeing them. There are two musical tributes that I’ve found this past week that have the same feeling. This music was created to help us heal and hopefully it will do just that. The first is Broadway for Orlando‘s performance of “What the World Needs Now is Love” Follow that link to hear the song and to donate to the project. The second is Melissa Etheridge in concert performing a new song titled Pulse. Take inspiration from these songs and write a song about how music can help to heal someone emotionally.

“Two for Flinching”

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem that explores your thoughts on the action of flinching. Are you the type of person that never flinches or that flinches all the time? What does it mean to you to flinch? Some see it as a sign of weakness or nervousness. And some just view it as a sign that something got unexpectantly close to your face. What connotations do you believe about the action? What has brought you to these beliefs?

Internet Inspiration: Character Aesthetic

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It’s a popular practice among fandoms on Tumblr to gather pictures that remind the fans of characters and post them labeled So-and-so’s Aesthetic. They pictures generally won’t be of the characters themselves. Instead it is a set of images that matches the character’s personality or experiences. Gather your own set of pictures that represent your character’s aesthetic. Find at least six. They could be images of places your character has gone for wants to go, things your character would wear, foods your character likes to eat, or anything else that when you see it makes you think of your character. Once you’ve found at least six images, write a scene that features some of these images or a character sketch that shows how these images relate to your character.

Poetic Form: The Lai

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The lai is a French form of poetry consisting of nine-lines that uses an “a” and “b” rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme follows the pattern: aabaabaab. The lines with an “a” rhyme use 5 syllables; the “b” rhyme lines have 2 syllables. Because of the brevity created by these syllable counts the lai form is sometimes used as a format for the stanzas of a larger poem. Try your hand at a lai whether it’s the single verse or you use this form to create a multi-stanza poem is up to you.
