Modernizing A Story

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I got my mom to start watching BBC’s Sherlock this week. She was already a fan of Elementary so I figured why not have her check out the British version. I think that the Sherlock Holmes story is one of the retellings that she may have seen the most versions of and it’s interesting to see all the differences and similarities of each retelling. For example the two shows I mentioned are both modernized versions of the original story. Take inspiration from these retellings and find another old story that you can bring into a more modern era. How does changing the time period change the details of the story?

Letting Chaos In

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about the most chaotic point in your life so far. What was it like for so much to be out of your control? Was it an enjoyable experience or did it make have a negative impact? How long did the chaos last? How did you get things back under control?

Mineral Dragons

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

There is an artist on DeviantArt by the screen name Pythosblaze that created a series of dragon images that are based on mineral stones. They are absolutely gorgeous. Check out these dragons and the other art on Pythosblaze’s page. Write about one of these dragons or a few of them interacting. Or perhaps take inspiration from these dragons and create your own creatures based on minerals or something else that occurs in nature.

Not Listening To A Word You Say

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about that moment when you can tell someone isn’t listening to you. Describe the way that you know they aren’t listening. Is it something in their facial features? Is there some other sign? Was the thing you’re talking about important? Are you annoyed that they aren’t listening? How do you react to someone not listening?

Views on Death

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Patent Pending recently brought out a video for “Six Feet” one of the songs off their newest album Riot Hearts Rebellion. The song has lyrics that say “only six feet between me and getting some rest.” It sounds like a version of the whole “sleep when you’re dead” phrase. But I was thinking about in another way. It could be that the voice in this song views death as a release. There are so many different ways that people think about death; some people are scared of it and some people view it as just a part of life. How does your character view death? If he does fear it, think about why that is. Where does his attitude on death come from in general.

Needing Some Rest

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about the strongest level of exhaustion you’ve ever experienced. What caused this exhaustion? Was it lack of sleep, over working yourself, or a combination of the two? Why didn’t you just go to sleep? What motivated you to keep going despite being so tired? Would you ever push yourself that hard again intentionally?

Internet Inspiration: Scary Easter Bunnies

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve never been a big fan of the whole “take a picture with the easter bunny” thing that the mall does every year. But I found some pictures of bunny costumes that, if I saw them in real life, would change my attitude from not a fan to dear god run from that devil bunny. These were only a few of the less disturbing evil easter bunny suits. (I didn’t want to give you guys too bad of nightmares.) Write a scene that features an easter bunny suit. Is your character as turned off by the concept as I am? Or does he have fond memories of sitting down with the easter bunny?

Poetic Forms: The Elegy

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

An elegy is a song of sorrow or mourning. Though traditionally these are written for people we know that have passed away, poets have written elegies for many different kinds of loss, sorrow, and mourning. Write an elegy of your own. What in your life is the greatest point of sorrow? What has given you your most recent reason to mourn? Do you have an understanding of loss that comes with losing a loved one or is your concept of loss based around something else?
