Kind of Good

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

There is a song performed by Billy Zane in one of the episodes of Charmed that I watched recently with the lyric “I’m of the mind that everything’s kind of good.” This line in particular sticks out to me for some reason. I guess I like the idea of it. I’m taking it to mean that there is something good or meant to be in everything that happens. Write a scene that captures this feeling. Or if you have a different interpretation of the line, write a scene about the meaning your find. The first attached YouTube clip is the scene I’m referencing from Charmed but the one below it is the full song performed by Maria Williams.

Poetic Progress

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about progress. Is this progress that you would like to see in your own life? Maybe progress you’ve seen in your writing or would like to see in your writing. Or is this progress you would like to see in the world? What changes do you think that we need to make to better the world around us? What changes have we made for the better already?

Internet Inspiration: Fictional Currency Exchange

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found the image below as part of a larger infograph that broke down the price of many things in the Harry Potter world but for the purposes of this prompt this section is the only part that really mattered. This shows the conversion rate of Wizarding money to US Dollars. It might be more helpful to that world for it to be in the UK’s currency but for now this is just to spark some inspiration. Write a scene that features currency exchange. What is the exchange rate? Or write about a currency that you created for your world in a way that it gives your reader an idea of how much each piece of currency would be worth to them.

Poetic Form: Cinquain

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

You’ve likely all heard of haikus before and maybe even tankas. These poems rely on syllable count to give them form. Adelaide Crapsey is credited with creating the more modern poetic form called the cinquain inspired by these other poems. It is a five-line poem with a syllable count rinsing by two for the first four lines and dropping back down for the last. Your syllables should be 2, 4, 6, 8, 2. Unlike the Japanese forms that inspired it, there isn’t much mention that the cinquain focuses on nature. Your subject matter is all up to you.

Read Easier

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found this thing online that changes the color of things you read on your computer to make for easier and faster reading. BeeLine Reader’s color coding is meant to guide your eyes more accurately to prevent readers from skipping or repeating lines. It is also proven helpful for people who struggle with reading because of conditions like dyslexia and ADHD. Whether you’re looking for something the make reading on your computer easier or you just want to increase your reading speed, it’s definitely a cool idea. Take inspiration from BeeLine Reader and write about a character that has difficulty reading. How does this play into the character’s daily life?

Difficulties Making Friends

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Sometimes it seems that the older I get the harder it is to make lasting friendships. I mean I can connect with people easily enough. I’m fairly likable. But for whatever reason when push comes to shove the friendship doesn’t last. Either I won’t put enough effort into it or the other person won’t or other things get in the way like uncooperative schedules. Do you have the same issue? What keeps you from forming lasting friendships? Write a poem about the difficulties of making friends and hanging on to them.

Life on Other Planets

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I had myself a little Firefly marathon yesterday. It makes me a little sad that I can rewatch the entire series in one day when it is easily one of my favorite shows. But you’re not here to listen to me crying about how Firefly should have been renewed all those years ago. Still if you’ve never seen it, it’s worth checking out. The series is based in a future where the human race has moved on from Earth and taken over new planets and moons all through out space. I think the best part of this future is that even though humans have progressed enough to create all of the new technology that comes with traveling to other planets and making them safe for human life, in a lot of ways the life style of many characters has regressed. Some planets are as modern and metropolitan as can be but most of the time the characters are seen in places that have gone back to a frontier lifestyle. Write a piece that features human life on multiple planets. How does the life style of people differ from planet to planet in your world.

The Danger in Comparisons

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about why it is important not to compare yourself to other people. We all live with unique experiences and this makes it impossible for us to truly say that anyone should be just like someone else. While it is okay to admire others though it’s important to find that healthy line to draw before you start feeling like you don’t live up to the example they’re setting. Do you compare yourself to others? If so, in what way, physically, mentally, or maybe in your actions or accomplishments? How can you make sure that you’re not hurting your self-esteem with these comparisons?
