Finding Joy

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I love the quote at the very beginning of the movie trailer for Joy. “The world doesn’t owe you a thing.” I think it’s important to remember that. This movie looks really good, with the same director and much of the same cast as Silver Linings Playbook. But today I want to focus on that quote. I think that it’s especially good to keep in mind with the start of the new year tomorrow. We have to build everything we want from life on ourselves. Write a story where your character feels this quote is true to his life.

Goodbye to the Year

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

We’re on the last day of 2015. While generally I look at New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as the combined beginning of something fresh and full of opportunity, there’s no denying it’s the end of something too. Write about endings today. Does an ending have to be good or bad? Is there room for it to be both? Which side will you lean towards with the end of 2015, is it the end of a losing streak or the end of a good year?

Tech Clothing

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I saw this piece by Behnaz Farahi called Caress of a Gaze. The clothing has a camera inside it that tracks the motion of eyes and then the clothing moves with the gaze. This is certainly an interesting idea but I think it would scare the crap out of me to actually wear something that moved on its own. I’m already pretty distrustful of technology, one too many viewings of The Terminator and iRobot. Anyway it has me wondering what ways clothing and technology will eventually mix further in the future. Write a scene that features a prediction of your own for the mixing of these two industries.

Guilt Free

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about guilt trips. I’m trying to give up on giving in to guilt trips. It feels better to say no and do what you want to do than to feel like you’re only doing something because someone was trying to guilt you into it. It’s started to feel like manipulation to me. Write your own thoughts on people’s attempts to make you feel guilty.

Fossil Flowers

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Rachel Dein used plaster casts to create these gorgeous fossil plant tiles. Each cast that Dein makes can only be used once so each of these tiles is truly one of a kind. She sells these one of a kind pieces on Etsy if any of you love them enough to buy one. Take inspiration from these pieces and write a scene in which your character encounters something fossilized.

Get Well Soon

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem wishing someone well. What can you do or say in this poem to take their mind of their sickness? Is there actually hope that they will get better? Or is this a serious illness? Even if it is serious or they say there isn’t hope, maybe that is even more reason to write something that will make them smile. Write to show them that you care.

Attention to Motion

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Fall Out Boy has been pushing this guy’s music on their blog pretty hard the past few months so I finally gave in and checked him out. Max’s song “Gibberish” is featured below. Overall from his stuff I’ve seen online, I can see him getting plenty of radio play but I’m not going to be rushing to buy his albums. I picked “Gibberish” specifically because I thought the video was the coolest. The way that they manipulate motion through out the video would be a cool thing to try to describe in a scene. Write a scene in which you can attempt to describe motion the way you see it in the video for “Gibberish.”

Being In Control

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about being in control. Do you prefer being in control of most situations? Do you like it when you’re the boss and others look to you for what to do? If your the type of person that is always in control, write about that sense of power and order. Or is control something that you lack in your life? Are you constantly struggling to find a way to keep things together? If you lack control over things, write about how that makes you feel and how it makes you live your life.

Internet Inspiration: Archery Tag

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I flapping love this idea! Archery tag is officially my new favorite sport even though I’ve never played it. The idea of taking a deadly sport and turning it into a light-hearted game that you can play with kids makes me happy. Write a scene in which your character plays archery tag or in which you take some other deadly sport and turn it into a game.

Poetic Forms: The Madrigal

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Madrigal is originally an Italian form but because of the amount of variation that comes with it I’m going to stick with the English-version which has more standard rules. The English-version of the madrigal was developed by Geoffrey Chaucer. It is usually written in iambic pentameter, composed of three stanzas: a tercet, quatrain, and sestet, and all three of the lines in the opening tercet are refrains. I’ve put a layout below of what it ends up looking like. It actually reminds me a bit of a Villanelle.
