Family Inheritance

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about something that you inherited from your family. Is this a physical item? Maybe your family is the type to pass down heirlooms. Or is this more of a family trait? Maybe it’s physical feature. In my family we like to say that our mom marked us each with a mole so that she knew we were hers. Or maybe it is a family behavior/belief? How much of you belief system comes from lessons you learned from your family? Did you get your religious beliefs from them? Did they pass down to you a deep sense of right and wrong? Maybe you want to write about something that was passed down through you family that you didn’t inherit. Are you open minded in the face of their bigotry? You dodged a bullet there. Whether you just pick one of these options or some combination of them write about your family inheritance.

Feel It And Flaunt It

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Find a song that makes you feel sexy or a song that would make your character feel sexy. Let that song inspire you to write a scene in which your character feels confident in their sexuality. Honestly you don’t even have to limit it to sexual confidence. Any kind of confidence will work. Let someone try to bring your character down and fail because you character is faulting that confidence. Can you character achieve more acting while holding onto this confidence than they would normally get done? Have your character try something that would normally scare them. PS. my suggested song if you don’t already have one is “Flaunt It” from TV Rock.

Internet Inspiration: Changing Foot Traffic

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I saw these two inventions that made me start to think about the future of foot traffic. The Cocoa Motors WalkCar and the the Lexus Hoverboard are two inventions I’ve come across online. I know that the Hoverboard is dependant on magnetic tracks from looking into it further but while it is limited in where you can use it, I think it’s still a pretty cool invention. The WalkCar seems like a more practical invention as it would seem it can be used anywhere. It is a battery-powered device, described as a Segway without the bulk, it’s about the size of a laptop. Check out the videos for these two inventions. These are things that would have been considered science fiction at some point but are now reality. Imagine a world where these inventions are improved and used regularly. What kind of future does this bring to mind for you? Can you see these changing what it means to be a pedestrian down the road? Maybe take it a step further and imagine whatever you think would come next to top these inventions. Write a story that incorporates a change to the way people travel.

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write about YOUR Everglades, whether you’ve had personal experience there or it’s a place you’ve only dreamt up in your mind. Submit one to three poems (include your name on each poem), or 1,500 to 3,500 words of prose, double-spaced, online: https://lominybooks.submittable.com/submit/43169.

Fixing Fairy Tale Flaws

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I finished reading the Harry Potter series again but this time for good measure I read the Hogwarts Library collection as well. I figure now is a good a time as any before all the spoilers start coming out for the movie of Fantastic Beast & Where to Find Them. The Tales of Beedle the Bard was my favorite of the collection though. There is a point made in the introduction that unlike usual fairy tales the character’s in these ones don’t do much waiting around or sleeping until they get rescued. These fairy tales also put magic in the hands of the heroes more often than older tales tend to. I can only guess that these are things that bothered J. K. Rowling about fairy tales since she makes a point to change them in her own tales. Think of something that bothers you about your favorite fairy tales. Write a fairy tale of your own that flies in the face of this flaw.

Journey Beside Strangers

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I saw a fantasy cast list for a live action version of Atlantis: The Lost Empire which of course lead to me watching the Disney movie again. There were two things that struck me in this viewing that I tend to overlook or forget about when I’ve watched in the past. The first being that Milo embarks on his journey with a crew of complete strangers. He has no companion at the start of this journey that he knows and trusts fully. The second thing I seem to forget is how quickly things go wrong causing a massive crew set to operate a state of the art submarine to drop to a small handful of survivors. Write a scene that features one of these two qualities. If your character is embarking on a journey with strangers decide quickly if they can be trusted whether your character knows it or not. Should you decided you’re in a violent mood write a scene that features an event of such heavy casualties that it turns hundreds to less than a dozen. How well does your character know those lost to this event?

What Makes Us Vulnerable

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about what you think makes people most vulnerable. When you think of that word are you more prone to think of physical/bodily vulnerabilities or emotional vulnerabilities? Are these things shared by all humans, all living creatures, or only by a certain culture you belong to? Do you accept that these vulnerabilities are part of who you are? What do you do to hide these vulnerabilities or protect against being hurt because of them?

Dressed Up Pets

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Is your character the type of person that would dress his pet up? Or does your character hate those people? Write a scene that involves your character interacting with an animal in clothing. Was your character the one that struggled to get them dressed? Or is your character making fun of someone else that is trying to do so? Did the animal dress itself? Is this a magical animal that walks around in people clothes solving crimes?

Animal Eyes

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about making eye contact with an animal. Do you believe that you can see more than just the eye itself when you make eye contact with a living thing? What knowledge or imagined knowledge did you glean from looking into this creature’s eyes? Can you tell what your dog wants from you by staring at each other long enough? Have you ever stared into the eyes of a dangerous animal? Did the look in its eyes tell you anything? What do you see when you look into the eyes of a caged animal?

Where Is That Light Coming From?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

South Korean artist Airan Kang creates striking illuminated books or “electronically luminescent sculptures cast from transparent synthetic resin” for her Luminous Words series. I like the idea of playing with the meaning of what an electronic book could be. Luminous Words feels like a fun and intelligent commentary on the way that reading has changed with technology. This set has given me a few different thoughts as far as prompts so this will be a sort of take your pick situation BTs. Write a scene that features an odd/interesting light source in an otherwise dark setting. Write a scene set in a future of your own design continue to explore the evolution of books and reading there. Write a scene that features the debate between e-book vs. print.
