Putting Feuds To Rest

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So if any of you are big Nicki Minaj or Taylor Swift fans, I’m sure you already know all about how they were feuding. But at the MTV VMAs their performance together sent the message that things are good between them again. Nicki Minaj knows how to keep name in the spot light though. Later in the evening she was calling out Miley Cyrus. Even if it doesn’t lead to a feud like the one between here and Taylor that made two big headlines for Nicki Minaj in one night. Today focus on a feud your character has with someone. How did it start and escalate? What would it take to put the feud to rest? (I couldn’t find a YouTube video of the full performance that wasn’t annoying interrupted by people’s reviews so I’ve copied a link from a friend’s blog if you guys want to check it out.)

The Truth You Don’t Want to Hear

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about a harsh truth. What makes it hard to hear this or speak it? Is it the type of truth that will only make people feel bad? Is there anyway to phrase it that would make it less terrible? Is it absolutely necessary that this truth be spoken? Are you the one that is hearing it or speaking it? Is it better to leave it unsaid?

Internet Inspiration: Memory Games

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found this picture online a long while back and have been obsessed with it ever since. I’ve always liked the idea of messing with memory in stories. This should be a fun way to inspire you. Write a story that makes used of the card below. Fill in the blanks and then think about the story behind it. The card assumes a lot on there so you may need to edit it a bit or to think about who your character would and wouldn’t be sending these cards to. Do you start with the events that lead to your character wanting the memories erased? Do you start after the erasing has already happened? Do you want to write about the erasing process?

Balancing the Scales

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I finished The School for Good and Evil this week. It’s a fairy tale inspired book that plays with the idea of what makes a person good or evil. The school is meant as they say many times in the book to maintain the balance between good and evil. But for the past 200 years good has always won everything so can we really call that balanced? The story has a leading female character in each half of the school allowing us to see what’s being taught to each side. But each girl isn’t fully convinced they are in the right school for most of the book and tries to switch sides on multiple occasions. Write a scene that plays with the concepts of good and evil. What makes someone truly belong to one side or the other? How easy is it to switch sides in your world?

Worry of Second Chances

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I was in a bar last week and they were playing a very odd movie on their television. The movie was called Nightbreed and I don’t totally know what it’s about because I wasn’t able to hear the sound of the movie over all the other things going on in the bar. From just watching portions of it muted though it seemed like someone wrote down a nightmare and then edited it until it was a movie. Part of me wants to give it a chance and watch it in full with sound but I’m worried based on the parts that I watched that I’ll have the same experience of making fun of it with my friends even when we know what’s going on. People say all the time to give things a second chance but there is always that worry before a second chance. Write about your character’s worry over giving someone or something a second chance. What went wrong the first time? Has the person/thing earned this second chance in some way? Also here is the Nightbreed trailer so you can see what a big bag of weird it is. The trailer actually makes it look like it makes more sense.

Never Have I Ever

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about something you’ve never actually experienced before. What do you think it’s like to do this thing? Ask someone you know that has had the experience what it’s like. Is their description anything like you’re imagined version? Let them read your imaginings and tell you how accurate you are. Maybe chose something to write about that people usually only experience once or can’t describe after having experienced it. What about the experience makes it indescribable? I mean there’s death which is hard to get an accurate description on. But you don’t have to pick something so morbid if it’s not your style. Maybe it’s something like thinking in another language. It has to be hard to describe especially when your trying to translate how the language changes in your head.

Shirt Design Time

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Threadless has been advertising free artist shops coming this fall. For all those of you that have ideas about fashion or have always wanted to see your art out in the world this could be a good opportunity. If you’re just a fan of the Threadless site and all the unique styles it has to offer then I’m sure you’ll be excited to see all the new artists that come to it this fall. Take inspiration from this opportunity and write a scene that involves your character making a shirt of his own. Is this a flash back to when he was a little kid and he made a cute hand print design on a shirt for school? Or does your character have a big event coming up that will require a custom shirt for him and the group he’s going with? Or maybe you have a character that is passionate about clothes and enjoys making his own? Whatever the case, let the shirt your character makes inspire the scene.

For Your Protection

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about something that you think is worth protecting. Is this a person, place, thing, or idea? Get into the detail of it so that we have a clear image. Describe what about it makes it worthy of protection and care. Tell us why it needs protecting. Is it in danger from something specific or simply fragile by nature? Do other people care about protecting it too or is this something that you do alone?

View From The Sky

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a scene that features a detailed description of where your character is. Bonus points if you can work in a view from above like in the pictures that I’ve attached on here. These are all places and views that would be a lot of fun to describe in your work if you want to use one of them. Think about the way that the design of this place works. How do the inhabitants work flow within the place.

  1. Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  2. The Kremlin, Moscow, Russia
  3. Central Park, New York, United States
  4. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  5. Madrid, Spain
  6. Paris, France
  7. Santorini, Greece
