Why You Belong Here

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve been rereading the Harry Potter series lately and I’ve been paying special attention to the house placements of the characters. Harry was particularly concerned with his house from the very beginning. Most of the other main characters that share his house could almost have fallen into different houses based on their most prevalent characteristics. But each of them has a moment or multiple moments that let you see why exactly they belong in Gryffindor. Today take inspiration from this fact and write a scene that shows exactly why your character is right where he belongs.

Dealing With Bad News

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about either delivering or receiving bad news. If it is about delivering, what is the person’s reaction? Is it what you expected? Did you have anxiety about how best to deliver it? Could you have done it better? If you chose to write about receiving bad news, write about both the reaction that everyone else saw and all the thoughts and reactions you had that they didn’t see. Is there a situation in which you can write a poem about both sides? Maybe you received the bad news first but are then tasked with delivering it to someone else. How does their reaction differ from your own?

Misdirection of the Gods

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Road to El Dorado is one of those under appreciated movies from my youth. But even watching it again today though I still enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters. Miguel and Tulio are best friend out to make their fortune. They aren’t exactly picky about how they do it either. They are lying and cheating when we first meet their characters and when they’re caught they engage in further misdirection to escape trouble. So it should be no surprise that when they get mistaken for gods they roll with it instead of correcting the mistake. Following suit their questionable choice, write a scene where a case of mistaken identity brings your character on a new adventure.

Got That Comfort Food Feeling

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about your comfort foods. Do you have a different type of food for different situations? Like you indulge in ice cream when you’re going through a break up but you like mashed potatoes when your sick. Which situation is closest to how you’re feeling now? Write about how it makes things better even if it’s just by a small amount. Is the comfort it provides enough to get you through the moment? Or is it just part of your process to comfort yourself?

Bookish and Dapper

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

There are always ways to make your style a little more bookish. I’ve posted a few different sites that sell book themed t-shirts for a more casual look. But what about when you want to get a more dapper gentlemanly look while still letting people know you love reading and writing? I found a link on BookRiot that will lead you to some accessories for just such an occasion. Take some inspiration from these accessories and write a situation that requires your character to dress a little fancier than usual. How does your character’s individuality shine through in the clothing?

Giving Up Is For Quitters

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about giving up. How does it make you feel? How often do you give up on things? What was the last thing you gave up on? Was it giving up the right thing to do like with smoking or drinking? Or should you have pushed forward? Do you regret you decision to quit? Will you try again or when you gave up was it a forever sort of deal?

Odd And Abandoned

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The building in the pictures below is an abandoned church in Indonesia. The locals call it Gereja Ayam; it was built by 67-year-old Daniel Alamsjah, after he received a divine message from god, with the intention that it would look like a dove. Most people believe that it looks more like a clucking chick though. Though abandoned and decaying, the building attracts many people every year looking to explore it. Write your own odd, abandoned place that your character can explore or that your character’s area is known for.

Lying about your Personal Life

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Do you ever lie about your personal life? Like maybe someone is hitting on you a little too aggressively and you say sorry but I have a boyfriend. Or maybe you tell people who you’re a few years younger than you actually are. This imaginary boyfriend or made up age has change the way people see you. Write a poem about the way people see you when you’re giving them a false idea of who you are. Do you like the idea of deceiving them? Or do you feel anxious about the lie and try to get away from the topic as quickly as possible.

Being Born Into Something

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I was listening to “Pilgrim” by Mø, a song with an odd video but a relaxing vibe, and I heard a lyric that stuck with me. “Oh what a world I was born into.” I think it stuck with me because as writers we are always creating the world our characters are born in. Even if we are writing in the real world we can’t help but write our own version of it based off our biases and experiences. Think about what makes your character’s world odd or unique. Be it something that everyone in that world experiences or something that is unique to your character’s life. Write a scene that explores what your character thinks about the world around him, the world he was born into.

Who You Turn To For Advice?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Is there one person in particular that you turn to for advice more than anyone else? Write a poem about a piece of advice this person has given you that you think is important to everyone. If you don’t have that one person think about the last person to give you good advice. How did that advice change things for you? How do you think it would change things for other people?
