I Just Want to Lai Around

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The lai is a French form of poetry. It’s a nine-line poem that uses an “a” and “b” rhyme following this pattern: aabaabaab. The lines with an “a” rhyme use 5 syllables; the “b” rhyme lines have 2 syllables. These syllable counts make for a rather short poem so some times the lai form is used as a format for the stanzas of a larger poem. Not to say that you couldn’t have a poem that is complete in those nine lines, there are certainly shorter forms of poetry out there. It is just up to you how much you have to say in this poem. Get started writing a poem using the lai form and see where it takes you.
