All Hallows Read

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Happy Halloween! So I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff about All Hallows Read this year. At first I thought it was a fun way of saying that you were going to celebrate Halloween by reading. (I’m all for reading but on Halloween I’m not gonna be staying in to read. I’d rather be out trying to wake the Sanderson Sisters and meet a talking cat.) But actually All Hallows Read is a tradition of giving someone else a scary book as a Halloween gift. As far as Halloween traditions go it sounds pretty awesome. To learn more about All Hallows Read check out the website: http://www.allhallowsread.com And to celebrate Halloween in your writing, write a scene about your character trick or treating when he was younger.

Your Haunting

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about something that haunts you. Whether it is an actual ghost, the memory of a person, or something you regret is up to you. Make sure to capture the feeling of a haunting though. The trapped feeling that inspires fear and despair. Find the thing you can’t let go of and dig into it until you find the words that best describe it.

The Avengers Are Back

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The new Avengers movie is coming and they are finally releasing previews for it. The newest has this super creepy sing song voice in the background. Something about that voice really gets under my skin. Maybe because it sort of sounds like an evil child and in my reality children are already kind of evil so that’s double evil right there. Write about your character encountering a sound that gets under his skin.

On The Road

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about the joys of driving. Write about the open road with your windows down. Bring the feeling of freedom and the potential to go anywhere into this poem. Fill it with the physical feeling of the steering wheel and the bumps in the road. Write about the joy of green lights all the way to your destination. Or write about an empty highway with no one to cut you off or get in your way.

High Fashion Monsters

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So the idea behind today’s prompt is to make a high fashion version of one or more of the classic Halloween monsters: vampire, witch, werewolf, mummy, Frankenstein monster. I tried to find some images to help inspire you all but sadly found very little that actually satisfied me. I’ll post a few of the images I did like below but I really think that our imaginations could do better. Write a scene for the couture movie monster that speaks to you most.

What People Are Like

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem that starts each stanza with great general statements about what people are like. Dig deeper into the stanza with specific observations to prove the statement. End the poem with a stanza about what people should be like. Fill this stanza with things that you wish or prefer to see more of in the people around you.

Ghost Art

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Just in time for Halloween a friend of mine found these awesome ghost photos by surrealist photographer Cristopher McKenney. I love how scary these things are. Look at the hanged man one and tell me you wouldn’t be scared out of your pants if you found that in the woods. Use these pictures as inspiration to write your own ghost story.

Starting With Similes

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Start a poem with a simile. Find every way in which the two things you are comparing are similar. Then immediate disagree with yourself. Have an “Actually it’s not like that at all” moment. Write about how these things are actually not like each other at all. Which side of the poem is more convincing?

Liars And Theifs In Love

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve been listening to this song almost nonstop today. It’s not new or anything. In fact, it has been on my iPhone for a while now but today it’s sticking with me. Listen to the song and imagine the character’s from it. Write your own version of these characters’ love story. Embellish them until they are full people in your mind. Discover their motives and their real desires.

Dreamcatcher Gone Wrong

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a poem about nightmares as if they are something desirable. Or write one about dreams as if they are something to fear or hate. Write about a request to your dreamcatcher to send you only nightmares. What could be so bad about dreams to make you want nightmares instead?
