Lovely Day to Take the Boat Out. Wouldn’t You Say?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a scene on a boat. What kind is up to you and probably will vary depending on your story’s setting. But just to get you started I’ll give you a few things to consider. Is the boat out on the water or docked? Does it already have a destination set? How many people are going to be on the boat with your character? Does your character get seasick? Is this your character’s first time on a boat? Does your character know how to swim? Can your character successfully fight off an attack by pirates? What if those pirates are curse to be undead skeletons that’s true creepy appearance is only revealed by the light of the moon? Okay I’m mostly joking with those last two. Though piracy doesn’t need to mean swashbucklers and sword play, there are modernday pirates still. Or you could write the equivalent for your story’s setting if you wanted. Well before I start rambling even more about pirates or jump topics from pirates to sharks, I’ll stop myself and let you all get to writing those boating stories.

Mystery Letter

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a letter/email to your character from an anonymous source. What is the letter about? Is it a love letter? Is it a warning or a threat? Did anything else come with the letter? Or were there any attachments on the email? Was the letter even meant for your character or did he/she get it on accident? Is the letter late, if so how late? Would the information in it have been useful days, weeks, months or years ago? How will your character respond without the knowledge of where the letter originated? I know you’re already itching to answer all these questions so what are you waiting for? Start writing!

Your Power is What Now?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

When we think about super powers we usually think of the ones that we want. But this time I want you guys to come up with a list of super powers that you would view as undesirable, useless, or oddly specific. Make the list at least 20 items long. Once you’ve finished it write a scene that involves a character with one of these powers. Or maybe a super team with a few of them. Can these characters figure out ways to use their powers for the greater good? (Or evil if your characters are villains.) If you need a sample think of the sidekicks from Sky High or Moist from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog.

Planning for the Future

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Write a scene that happens sometime in your character’s distant future. Call it a potential future if you don’t want to make it an absolute that your character will be marrying wife number three at 67 years old. Just think about what you want for your character, what he/she wants for him/herself, and how many of those desires would be likely to come to pass. Maybe write a few different distant futures that are all based on one decision and the different choices it provided.

Write Five Lines

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I dropped the ball this weekend with the prompts. Hopefully you all are still writing everyday though. If you haven’t written yet today stop what you’re doing and write at least five lines of whatever you were last working on. Or write five lines of something new. Set the goal and see if the inspiration comes after you’ve pushed those five lines out. If it does come keep writing. If not set a timer and try to write as much more as you can in thirty minutes. If truly nothing is coming to you switch to free writing until the timer is up at least you’ll have gotten something down.

Tree Hugging!

Hello Beautiful Thinker,

Get into nature tonight BTs! Smell some roses or feel the grass under your bare feet. Or more specifically have your character get into it. Write a scene that happens outdoors. Maybe in the woods if you think you can pull it off convincingly. Does your character go camping? Or is he/she somehow lost out there? Or maybe it’s not a forest but an open field or desert!

Switching It Up

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Today combat writers’ block by trying to write in a different space. If you usually write in your room move to a different room of the house. Or get out of the house all together. And try writing in a different form, switch from your computer screen to a pen/pencil and paper or vice versa. Get out the BTs.

Hitting the Restart Button

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

So I don’t know if this is a trend or just a coincidence, but there have been two movies produced recently that at least from watching the trailers seem to have ripped off Groundhog’s Day. While watching the trailers for both movies was enough for me to decide not to watch either of them, it just seems odd that they share this feature of the restart point. Of course, they reach the restart point in very different ways; Edge of Tomorrow has the protagonist restarting after he dies very (insert practically any video game ever) while Premature has the character restarting when he orgasms. Today write a story of your own that steals this concept. What would cause your character to restart? How many times does it take before your character starts going crazy from repeating the same day? What is the secret to stopping the day from restarting? What life lessons does your character learn in the process?

The True Meaning of Summer

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Summer is here! Well when you live in Florida like I do, the weather can some times trick you into thinking that Summer never left. But you all aren’t here to listen to me complain, you’re here for a prompt. So here it is! Write a scene that captures what summer means for your character. Is it pool parties and BBQ-ing? Or just the ability to wear shorts without losing a leg to frost bite? Who knows maybe your character will even burst into song like that snowman from frozen about how wonderful summer is. Maybe it’s vacations and exotic locations? Or perhaps your character is working through the summer. Get into the details of what summer is like wherever your character is; not just the weather but everything that goes with it too, fashion, activities, the attitudes of people around your character.

Hidden in the Shadows

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I was going through my backlog of cool stuff to post about and found these again! Maiko Takedas Shadow Jewelry pieces are some of the most interesting accessories I’ve ever seen. Check out the pictures below and let them inspire you. There’s a lot that you can write about here. The simple side of a character who wants to own one of these. Or if you lean more toward the fantasy side of things I’m sure your imaginations can come up with all mannor of magic, creatures, and powers based on these pictures.
