The Periodic Table of Storytelling

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

tumblr_inline_n1hfv8gAWB1qz4e4aI recently found out about this cool website: The Periodic Table of Storytelling. The break do is that this table features a bunch of classic TV tropes that you can break stories down into or build them up from. I thought it was pretty cute how they showed a few television shows and movies at the bottom of the page as “Simple Story Molecules.” You can buy a poster of the table on a DeviantART page for a little under $30 if you really fall in love with it. I don’t think that I will be one of those to buy the poster but that won’t stop me from spending a few hours playing on this site figuring out the molecules of my favorite stories. I hope you have fun doing the same BTs.

Unwanted Emotions?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I think that it’s a fairly universal thing to wish you didn’t have to feel a certain way. If nothing else it comes with the whole teenage angst package and that’s hopefully before anything truly painful happens like the loss of someone close. But I after watching this four part YouTube series called Affectio I’ll be thinking twice before wishing away my emotions again. This is a pretty clever web series that delves into some deep stuff in a very short timespan. I’m not sure how to further describe it without spoilers so if you can spare 18 minutes you can make it through all four episodes of this thought-provoking story.

How It’s Made: Wooden Shoes

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I found this YouTube video of a show called How It’s Made that featured wooden shoes. While they aren’t something I’d ever wear (except maybe for a costume) I thought that it was a pretty cool video that applied to my fashion day of the week. I mean the hair clippers go is a bit off to the side but still related since hair is a part of the fashion world. The padlocks part I can only justify with punk fashion. But the clogs are shoes so we’re on point there and fake leather is totally a fashion choice for those of us that can’t afford the real stuff or are morally opposed to it or something. So check out this video if you’ve ever been curious about the making of these mostly fashion related items.

PS I know this post was kind of half assed but I’m super busy with conference stuff so give me a break this week.

Giant Heels or Tiny Room?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

tumblr_n1g55wDuOZ1r4nm43o3_500At first glance I looked at these pictures and thought “Damn that is a big freaking pair of heels.” But after visiting the photographer’s page I found out that it isn’t actually a giant set of heels but a small room constructed around normal sized heels. I don’t know about you BTs but I think that makes these photos all the more awesome. It’s like one big mind F**k, if you’ll excuse my asterisks. It brings a whole new set of questions to viewing photographs. It’s already getting hard enough to tell what’s real and what’s photo shopped these days. It’s pretty cool how Petros Chrisostomou’s art asks us to challenge the way that we look at things instead of taking for granted what we assume we’re seeing. He has more work than the high heel pictures on his website but they are the ones that originally caught my interests. Click away here to check out his other work.

Celebrate the start of RuPaul Season 6!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race started to night and sadly I’m out of town unable to watch. But that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten my favorite drag queen. I’ll probably be watching the new episode as soon as it goes live on Logo’s website. Since I’m missing the premier, I thought I’d celebrate it by posting the music videos made during each season finale! Check them out on RuPaul’s RuTube Channel. (Yes it’s like YouTube except with a “Ru!” She is one witty queen.) Click that link to find more videos for RuPaul’s music as well. I can’t wait to see what song Ru makes a video for at the end of this season.

Game Night Fun!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

My friends, family, and I had a game night this week. Our game of choice was Cards Against Humanity! I’m fairly certain I’ve mentioned it on this blog a couple times before, but for those that don’t know it’s the most offensive card game ever, which is what makes it so much fun! Click here to visit their site and learn more about the game. I took pics of some of my favorite cards combos played throughout the games.

Buffy Fans Forever!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

buffy-comicI’ve referenced my love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on and off on this blog. (At least enough times to convince my editor to commit to watching the series with me despite her hatred for almost everything Buffy ever wears.) So I’m actually a little surprised I haven’t actually blogged about the series itself before this point. I’ve just finally caught up with the comic books that continue to tell Buffy’s story after the show ends. While I really do think that Joss Whedon’s characters shine just a little more brightly on television, I have to say that it’s pretty cool how he is successfully navigating both the film and comic world.

buffy-angel-faith-wide-560x2822There are very few things that capture the level of fandom that Buffy has for me. Before the show was continued in the comic for I was never one for reading comics. Don’t get me wrong I respected the value of comics and their ability to tell stories but I felt like all the great character’s stories started before my time and that it would be impossibly expensive to catch up on any of their storylines. But now I’m on my way to becoming a full on comic addict. I can’t wait for the next issue to come out and get just a tad bit crazy about it. I’ve discovered that for no real reason it’s desperately important for me to have both versions of the cover art for each issue. It’s actually very interesting how this storyline has introduced me to a whole new culture. I feel like telling you to watch the show and read the comics goes with out saying at this point but I’ll say it anyway. The Buffy-verse is awesome and if you aren’t already addicted to it BTs you’re missing out on a world of magic, vampires, drama, and strong leading women! It’s time for a little Buffy in your life.

Carrie Marathon

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

CarrieposterThis past weekend my sister and I sat down for a Carrie marathon. Neither of us had seen the original 1976 version all the way through. It seemed wrong to have known so many references in pop culture came from this movie without having seen it. So with the most recent remake on DVD now it was finally time to take on the classic film and its two reimagined films since. I haven’t read the book, though it’s now on my ever-growing list of things to read, so I don’t know which movie got closest to Stephen King’s story.

Chloe MoretzThere are of course scenes that are in all three movies, which makes me feel safe in assuming that they are in the book, like the period in the shower and bath after her rampage at the prom. Unsurprisingly the 2013 version of the film had the most vicious rampage probably because of the combination of the special effects and the fact that Chloë Grace Moretz’s Carrie seemed far more aware of the damage she was doing. I’d go as far as to say she was the first actress to portray the scene as a targeted murder spree rather than a trance of chaos and destruction. While I don’t know which is more accurate for the book, I know that this was the first time I felt more sympathy for the innocents Carrie attacked than Carrie herself. The thing that the 2013 version really did best was show us just how crazy Margaret White was, props to Julianne Moore for being my favorite crazy religious mother. All in all though every Carrie movie teaches one lesson: don’t pick on other people cause they just might go crazy and kill you with psychic powers at prom.

Space Undies

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

il_570xN.388302300_q006Generally I don’t shop on Etsy, half because I tell myself I can make that (though I rarely actually get around to doing it) and half because I have the magic touch that makes everything I like too damn expensive. But a friend of mine recently posted about this glow in the dark star scape clothing that almost makes me want to make an exception. It’s mostly the underwear that I want. Makeitgoodpdx is the seller of these awesome underpants and as you may have guessed since they are being sold on Etsy they are handmade here in the U.S. (well I guess the country part isn’t as obvious from the website as the handmade part.) The seller offers a subscription for Underwear of the Month, which would be pretty cool if it was more of a bargain. As it stands now you would spend just as much buying a new pair of underwear individually each month as you would on the subscription with the exception of shipping. But I think if you can afford to spend $28.00 on one pair of underwear a month an extra $2.00 for shipping isn’t going to break the bank. Still putting my money rant aside the glow-in-the-dark solar system is a pretty cool design.
