Hello Beautiful Thinkers,
I’m sure I’ve written about it in the past, but fairy tales are just so damn popular right now. I mean, who would have thought that Once Upon A Time would have gotten a spin off? And so quickly too. ABC is jumping on the fairy tale trend and riding it into the sunset. Let’s just hope that Jane Espenson finds a way to roll the popularity of two prime time shows into her side project Husbands. But television isn’t the only medium where we can find fairy tales being modernized and retold. The project, originally called Fairy Tales for Twenty-Somethings, was a tumblr by artist Tim Manley that placed the characters in the shoes of college-ish aged people.
It has now become a full book called Alice in Tumblr-Land: and Other Fairy Tales for a New Generation. While I appreciate that idea of mixing the modern and the fairy tale, I had some mixed feelings about the stories I read. For the most part they are cute and funny in a twisted way, others I wasn’t as impressed by. I guess that’s kind of the same for the originals too, though it’s just a case of which ones speak to me most. I am curious to see what happens to the characters in the book, so maybe when Christmas rolls around I’ll buy it with one of the many Amazon gift cards I’m bound to be receiving this year. (Hint hint family members that read this.)
