Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,
First of all I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving. I certainly plan to make the most of the week. I’ll be going down to SoFlo for the holiday to spend time with my family all together. Sadly that means I will be taking a break from writing to you BTs. But come next week I’ll be back and better than ever. (Or at least slightly fatter with turkey weight.) So happy holidays BTs and until next time!

Follow Your Favorite Fairytales to tumblr-Land

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

51ODREW7h4L_SY346__zps9b876794I’m sure I’ve written about it in the past, but fairy tales are just so damn popular right now.  I mean, who would have thought that Once Upon A Time would have gotten a spin off? And so quickly too.  ABC is jumping on the fairy tale trend and riding it into the sunset.  Let’s just hope that Jane Espenson finds a way to roll the popularity of two prime time shows into her side project Husbands.  But television isn’t the only medium where we can find fairy tales being modernized and retold.  The project, originally called Fairy Tales for Twenty-Somethings, was a tumblr by artist Tim Manley that placed the characters in the shoes of college-ish aged people.

tumblr_mvcsw6UtLm1re3yz3o1_400It has now become a full book called Alice in Tumblr-Land: and Other Fairy Tales for a New Generation.  While I appreciate that idea of mixing the modern and the fairy tale, I had some mixed feelings about the stories I read.  For the most part they are cute and funny in a twisted way, others I wasn’t as impressed by.  I guess that’s kind of the same for the originals too, though it’s just a case of which ones speak to me most.  I am curious to see what happens to the characters in the book, so maybe when Christmas rolls around I’ll buy it with one of the many Amazon gift cards I’m bound to be receiving this year. (Hint hint family members that read this.)

Kickstart The Next Great C**K Hunt

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

454948527_640Hopefully you all remember my post about the web series Hunting Season a while back.  Well if you don’t, click here and read all about it!  Those of you that grew to love the series and have been eager for more will be excited to know that a second season is a possibility.  But right now the Hunting Season team needs help to get the second season off the ground.  So they’ve turned to the fans to help make it a reality through Kickstarter.  It doesn’t seem like such an unrealistic goal these days for a cult following to come together and make a project as big as this a reality.  The full funding of the Veronica Mars movie is a prime example of how well Kickstarter can work for bigger projects.  I just hope that this web series has gathered the necessary following to follow in VM’s rather impressive Kickstarter footsteps.  I’m sure by now you all know the deal with KS is full funding or none at all so it’s up to the fans not just to make their own kickstarter donation if they can but to spread the word to all their friends. (Hence what I’m doing right now.)

If you’re a newer follower of mine and you have never seen Hunting Season you should check it out.  You can watch all eight episodes of season one for free. (Sans nudity; you have to buy the downloads to watch naughty BTs 😉 If you love the show join me and the rest of its fans in making season two possible.

Fitch The Homeless

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I hope you’ve all heard about the Fitch the Homeless project.  If you don’t know what it is, I’ll break it down for you.  Apparently A&F are kind of jerks.  More than that they are openly elitist.  They will not make their clothing above certain sizes, and if there’s a mistake in any piece of clothing they would rather burn it than donate it to people in need.  The idea being that only the “cool kids” can wear A&F.  So basically they are outright saying they hate overweight people and homeless people.  Not cool, right BTs?  So there is a guy out there that decided to take on A&F’s biased ways by going to thrift stores and finding A&F clothing to hand out to people on the street, hence the name Fitch the Homeless.

This makes a great YouTube video for sure, but one guy on his own only really beats the evil clothing company if we moved the story into movie land where the good guy always wins because he’s the good guy.  But since he’s not a Hollywood blockbuster hero (at least not yet anyway, who knows) he’s asking for help from anyone willing.  If you find that you don’t like the business practices of A&F he asks that you give anything from their brand in your closet to the homeless.  You can do a good deed and stick it to the man at the same time BTs.  Check out the video here.

Peeling Back The Surface

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I am still a little mystified by today’s artist.  His name is Robbie Rowlands and he has a series of photos on his site that freak me out in the best way possible.  In these pictures there are strips of the floor, walls, and ceiling being peeled away.  I don’t think that description really does justice to how cool these things actually are, I mean it looks as if he just walked into the room and started pulling a part of it away like he was peeling a banana. (That thought just got Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” stuck in my head.) But this shit really is bananas.  There is this one where he’s peeled up a cross shape from the kitchen floor of a beach house and it’s my absolute favorite of the series.

His doesn’t stop at walls though.  In other series on his website he takes a lot of other objects and twists them to look like they’re misshapen.  There is a really cool one in the Fallen collection where he’s made a basketball hoop look like a support beam has gotten tired and fallen over.  I’ll put some of the cool wall peels up but you should really check out his other stuff when you have a moment.

Dancing to the End with Janelle Monáe

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

121d76c1This post is dedicated to two of my friends in SoFlo, who gave me an iTunes gift card because they love me so damn much! (Thanks guys, you’re gorgeous.) I used that card to buy Janelle Monáe’s most recent album, The Electric Lady, and an iPhone game that took over my life for most of today.  But I put the game on the back burner to tell you guys about how fantastic this album is.  It may be the most interesting album I’ve bought this year.  Okay, that could be an exaggeration, this year has brought me some great music; but still, Lady Gaga and Lorde are going to have competition to hold on to their places on my most played songs this month.

janelle-monae-erykah-badu-queen-650-430In the songs of The Electric Lady, Monáe continues the story of Cindy Mayweather, an android in the future that has been the focus of much of her music.  This time around fans of her sci-fi alter-ego storyline get tastes of the android struggle in interludes of a future-based radio talk show.  The three interludes are spread throughout the album introducing different songs with smooth transitions for Monáe’s shifting style of music.  There’s some great variety on this album from “Dance Apocalyptic,” a fun dance song, to “Look into My Eyes” which sounds like it could be the theme to a Bond movie.  If the story telling feature and a variety of song style isn’t enough for you, the album also boasts some very impressive collaborations including Prince, Erykah Badu, Solange, Miguel, and Esperanza Spalding.  The Electric Lady is truly an impressive work of not just music but the creative abilities of Janelle Monáe as an artist and storyteller.

Turning Curtains into Pillows

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I got these fantastic curtains that look like book shelves on H&M’s website from the Home section. The only problem with them was that they were a little too long for the curtain rod that was already hanging. (I know first world problems.) Luckily I come from a family of brilliant people and it was a snap for my mom to hem them to the right length! The best part is that the extra fabric didn’t go to waste. Instead of tossing it out, I now have a long pillow that matches my curtains. (Side note H&M also sells smaller pillow cases that match which I bought for my chair.) I thought that you could take inspiration from my family if you ever end up with extra long curtains and make yourself a matching pillow. If you’re not really looking to spend any extra money on pillow stuffing consider instead saving the lint from your drier. It’s likely just as clean since you washed the clothes before putting them in the drier. And there you have it BTs, a matching pillow or maybe even two at no extra cost.

I know the lighting sucks but just pretend I was doing something artsy there.

That pillow is looking pretty awesome there, isn’t it? Rhetorical! Of course it is.

The smaller pillows from H&M 🙂

My cat being adorable. Nothing to do with the curtains but they happen to be in the shot too.

NaNoWriMo The Halfway Point

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

photo

My hand written pages!

This is the second full week of NaNoWriMo and I’m proud to say I’m doing well.  I’ve had good word count days and bad word count days, but they’ve pretty much evened each other out.  Plus I’m finally tweeting more regularly. (Though I’m cheating on that front. I put all the quotes I wanted to tweet on HootSuite and just let it do its thing.) Something I noticed from the blogs I already followed and ones I’ve started following for NaNoWriMo, that I might actually keep after, is that there is a lot of hate for NaNoWriMo.  It doesn’t really bother me; as some of my friends would say “haters gonna hate,” but I don’t really get it.  I guess sure, not everyone that does NaNo is going to succeed, but that’s a risk of life.  We can’t all win at everything.  Still, there is a lot of dream pooping going on.  It seems to me that the world will probably already take a dump on many of the NaNo dreams without writers attacking each other, so why not give in to a month of writing dreams?  You never know where a dream will take you.  But if you’re a writer you already know that life is trying to kick you in the privates.  This is about as sappy and inspirational as I get BTs so I guess what I’m saying is don’t listen to the hate, just have fun with it!

The Fifth Estate’s Secret Love Story

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

FifthEstate

“Secret Lovers! That’s what we are.”

I went with a friend to watch that movie about Wikileaks, The Fifth Estate, last week.  Now it’s probably just me projecting my sexuality onto the movie characters, but all I could think about through out the entire movie were the lyrics to that Atlantic Starr song, “Secret lovers that’s what we are!” Seriously, at the beginning there was some hardcore bromancing going on between these web geeks.  The one pursues the other at first because he “does really awesome work.” (Code for: has a super sexy brain.) Then later in the movie sexy brain totally interrupts a moment between nerd two and his girlfriend.  He seems completely clueless that he’s breaking up sexy time but I think we all know that he’s now obsessed with his new geek-tastic partner and doesn’t want to see him with that slut. “Secret lovers!”

the-fifth-estate-stanley-tucci-300

Since he was hardly in the movie I’ve given his sexiness some much deserved extra attention here.

But of course because they never bang each other they start taking out their sexual frustration by arguing about the website.  Eventually they can’t see eye to eye anymore because they couldn’t be open about how much they wanted to do each other.  Okay, so that was my twisted homoerotic version of what happened, but my friend (who had to do some actual research into the events that inspired the film) informed me that the movie was pretty much fiction after a certain point anyway.  If you’re looking for the truth, the movie isn’t that much more accurate than the over-simplified dirty version I just wrote out for you.  On the brightside, Stanley Tucci is featured in the last thirty minutes of the movie so it isn’t a total loss because we get to enjoy Tucci’s sexy baldness for a little while.

TOMS Marketplace: Online Shopping for Charity!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

TOMS Marketplace-660Today I learned about a website for all of you cause-obsessed online shopaholics: now you can embrace both your online shopping addiction and your favorite causes at the same time!  I’m sure you all have heard of TOMS brand shoes, they were super popular for a while because you got to feel like you were doing a good deed while shopping.  Well the founder of the TOMS shoe, Blake Mycoskie, took his love for cause-powered shopping to the next level by creating TOMS Marketplace.  As the name implies, the website brings together many different venders to form a virtual marketplace.  The thing that makes this one special is that no matter what you buy you are helping support a cause.  If you like the idea of supporting a specific cause, TOMS Marketplace allows you to select which one you want to support and then shows you the products and companies that are available for that specification.  You can also shop by Region and Brand, which is great if you already know where or whom you want your money going to.  For the moment there are six cause categories to choose from: children, education, health, job creation, nutrition, or water.  It’s certainly a good start but I think that human rights would be a good addition to that list.

toms-mktplace_0Now that I’ve talked it up I’m going to be kind of a bitch.  You definitely have to want to give back to the community if you’re going to shop on TOMS Marketplace.  I mean, $150 for a scarf?  Really?  I know there are people that pay more than that for big time brand names but those people are probably not worried about getting a scarf or anything but a tax break for their charity.  There are a few brands like Movember (supports men’s health) that are more reasonably priced.  $30 may still be a bit pricy for a t-shirt but at least you get the satisfaction of knowing that some day men won’t get cancer anymore because you bought that shirt.  I guess it’s up to you how you think of it.  Is it $418 for a weekend bag or is it a $418 donation that gets you a weekend bag as a show of gratitude?
