Fiction You Can Tweet About.

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

twitter-bird-white-on-blueI’ve thought about the concept of twitter fiction before, but seeing as I hadn’t really accepted twitter for the first few years of its existence and didn’t really embrace it until this year, I hadn’t taken the thought seriously. Some times the idea of a work of fiction in 140 character or less seems impossible.  But now it seems the thought that I shrugged off so many times before is gaining momentum.  It’s been nearly a year now since the first Twitter Fiction Festival, and even longer since the birth of #twitterfiction.  In fact, I did quite a bit of scrolling and found that the first use of #twitterfiction was on August 1, 2008.

Twitter

This pic came up in an image search for #twitterfiction and was just too adorable.

Still the hashtag didn’t really pick up steam until late 2012, before that it was only used maybe five times a month as opposed to the 20 times a day that it is now boasting.  That might not be enough to call it trending, but it’s certainly growth.  I can only imagine that the concept will continue to be explored as twitter continues to gather more followers and becomes a more common place for telling fictional stories. In my searching I found that @thedarkenedcity is a new #twitterfiction that’s getting some buzz.  I’ve read it through so far, and while it isn’t exactly great fiction, it certainly shows some of the potential that this form of story telling has to offer.

Riddick: Can You Blame Them For Hunting Your Sexiness?

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Riddick-2013I just finished watching the new Riddick movie!   That’s right, Vin Diesel is back with his silvery eyes and ready-to-kick-more-ass attitude.  While Vin is still the world champion for the all time sexiest voice ever award in my book, this script isn’t winning any contests for originality.  Don’t get me wrong, I still loved every minute of the monster vs. bounty hunters vs. Riddick action, but the movie pretty much feels like they remade Pitch Black.  Bounty Hunters come after Riddick but end up having to join his side to fight monsters that are native to the planet where they’ve tracked him down.

riddickteaserposter11292012Sounds familiar I know; the similarities go on as one of the bounty hunters shares a last name with the lead hunter in the first movie.  Not a coincidence BTs, it turns out that this is the original hunter’s father come to find out what happened to his son way back in that first movie.  True to form, Riddick gives him no bullshit and saves his life even though his son was a giant ass hat.

Now I know that it sounds like I’m complaining here and let’s face it, I am just a little bit.  But really, I’m glad to see Riddick back to his roots rather than mixed up in some more of that necromonger drama from the last film.  Those of you that are wondering what happened with that story line, don’t worry, it all gets explained away in the movies’ intro.  With that story line out of the way we get a nice hour of Vin Diesel doing what he’s good at: kicking ass and being sexy.  One more spoiler before I go BTs, a word of warning really to all you dog people, you’re in for some heartbreak in this one.

Bandanas Rock!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I am always trying to find different things to add to my personal style.  Lately I’ve been really into the use of bandanas as wristbands; the look has a punk sort of feeling to me.  A recent trip to Walmart set me up with a bunch of fun designs to work into my wardrobe.  The best part is that they were only one dollar each!  Most of the designs are a combination of black, white, and red, but I’m doing some searching online and in thrift stores for other colors and patterns.

I’ve also been looking up other fun ways to make use of the bandanas.  The two most popular ways that I’ve seen are as a Rosie the Riveter style head band and loosely tied around the neck, the latter of which was featured in a GQ article about cheap Spring ‘14 runway accessories.  I’ve got pics of my collection so far, and hopefully it’ll be growing in the near future.

Crayola Carving!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’ve always thought of carving and sculpting as extremely impressive when it comes to the art world.  It takes a powerful imagination and a skilled hand to take away just the right pieces of the preexisting medium to create a something beautiful and/or realistic.  Diem Chau’s crayon carvings are an amazing example of why I find this type of art so remarkable.  The amount of detail that is put into each of these tiny carvings makes me want to break out my Crayolas and start cutting away parts till I’ve got tiny works of art that look half this gorgeous.  The thing that I find most interesting about these crayon carvings is the fact that they are pieces of art made out of a tool for making art.  I just feel like there is something poetic about that.  Check out some of Chau’s carvings below.

It’s Britney Bitch and You Better Work!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Britney is back with a new single that incidentally is also full of good advice.  “Work Bitch,” like many of Britney’s other hits, is a pop/dance song.  But if you listen to the lyrics as I’m prone to do, the moral you can take from this one is that you better work for what you want.

There was a rumor floating around that this new single would be sampling RuPaul’s song “Supermodel,” but it seems that that wasn’t the case.  “Work Bitch” is highly inspired by “Supermodel” as the lyric “you better work” is prominent in both songs.  Despite the shared lyrics though, I didn’t hear any sounds taken directly from one song and placed in the other.  While I was really excited when I heard the rumor of a Britney song sampling RuPaul, I’m still happy with the way “Work Bitch” turned out and will probably be dancing to it as soon as I’ve posted this.  Check out the official audio for the song while we wait as patiently as possible for the video to hit Vevo and Youtube.

“Can I Quote You On That?”

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It’s not an uncommon practice on social networking pages to put up a daily quote.  I go back and forth on the idea a lot, but I’m sure that you have a friend (facebook or any other network) that does it or knows someone that does it.  Maybe even you do it yourself BTs.  If you do, you probably have a reference point that you pull your quotes from.  I’ve recently come across a new source for my own quoting habits, the “Quotationary,” and yes the quotation marks are part of the title, cute right?  I know that there are tons of websites and apps these days where I can find quotes, and honestly, if I was looking for a quote from a specific person I’d probably look towards the Internet.  But if you’re like me and you prefer a real book to an eBook, this one is a great source of quotes that you can flip through at your leisure.  I’ve plucked a few of my favorites for your enjoyment.

“It has been said that a pretty face is a passport. But it’s not, it’s a visa and it runs out fast.” Julie Burchill “Kiss and Tell,” 1988, Sex and Sensibility, 1992

NPH + Puppets = Brilliance!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

With his ever-growing popularity it seems like Neil Patrick Harris can’t go wrong these days.  So it was no surprise that I fell in love with his series of YouTube videos released this year where he “dreams in puppet.” I’m actually a little surprised that the videos of his puppet dreams don’t have more views since his initials are enough for most people to instantly recognize who you’re talking about and get excited to join in.  It’s not as if the videos are going undiscovered, but still, the more we watch these videos the more incentive for there is for him to make more of Neil’s Puppet Dreams.

There’s tons of naughty puppet humor like trouser weasels, Bollywood cow love, and alien probing.  Plus there are sexy guest stars including Nathan Fillion, Joe Manganiello, Neil’s husband David Burtka.  Even the Behind the Puppets video is completely hilarious.  But really BTs, why wouldn’t it be?  The episodes of Neil’s Puppet Dreams are on the Nerdist channel on YouTube.  You can see my two favorite episodes of the series below!

Modern Street Ninja Gear!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It’s no secret that I love boots, so my friends often tell me about sales and things of that nature.  A good friend of mine recently brought the clothing website Verillas to my attention, and I have to tell you BTs, I fell in love.  While the clothing is very expensive, once you see the collections you’ll understand why.  If you’ve ever been a fan of anime shows, cosplay, or just wanted to walk around like an urban ninja badass, these clothes are for you.  I’ll admit, I don’t really see a lot of fashionistas dying to have these items in their wardrobe. Verillas’ clothing feels like it’s been pulled out of a fantasy world for their shoppers.  Because of the zoom function on their images it was a little difficult to copy pics of the clothes, I only mention it so you all know how determined I was for you BTs.

The Art of Defacement!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Remixing isn’t just for music any more.  There is a trend in the art world of people mixing older artwork with new digital technologies to form a new image.  Thomas Robson is an awesome example of this style; he refers to his work as the art of defacement or collision art.  In his own words he is “experimenting in creating visually arresting images through the use of appropriation art and digital collage techniques.” Going through his site you’ll see that he has made some interesting and some disturbing collisions/defacements.  My favorite two collections from him are his “Luxe Art” and “Incendiary” collections.  The “Incendiary” works, as the name suggests, feature a ball of fire in place of where the head of a portrait would normally be.  His “Luxe Art” collection is best described as the combination of distorted photos and magazine ads.  The images that cover the faces in these works are often crumbled or cut up.  His other work is all done in a similar style of “defacement,” but the themes and images that each collection uses make it feel distinctly different from the next. NOTE: They get less “G-Rated” as you go down so be warned!
