Little Mix this Generation’s Girl Group!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

The Wanted and One Direction-1230495With boy bands like The Wanted and One Direction growing more and more popular, I’ve been waiting for the girl group equivalent to pop up.  We had the Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, and TLC back when *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and 98 Degrees were popular, but it seems that there is more success for a group of guys over girls nowadays.  Or maybe it’s just that the idea of being a Solo-Pop-Princess is more appealing than being a girl group now.  Whatever the cause, I was starting to find it pretty weird until I found Little Mix, a group of four girls that released their first full album a few days ago.

music_little_mix_dnaDNA, the debut album, has twelve tracks that will have all of us summoning up our inner 13-year-old girls to sing along secretly when no one else is in the car. (Oh, wait.  Maybe that’s just me.) They have some catchy stuff on this one, BTs, but if you don’t care for pop music or you don’t have teenage girl on your list of multiple personalities, this album might be skippable for you.

Like The Wanted and One Direction, Little Mix also comes to us from the UK.  Gosh, is this the second British invasion or something?  I’ll have to do a bit more research to see if we’re importing more UK artists than usual or if they just seem to be the only ones I’m hearing about lately.  But back to the girls.  Fun fact, they started off as solo artists, but after Perrie, Jesy, Jade, and Leigh-Anne auditioned for the X-Factor separately, they were brought together to become Little Mix.  Together they were the first group ever to win the X-Factor back in 2011.  I wonder how long before one of them gets the itch to try going solo again?  Maybe I’m wrong and they’re in it for the long haul.

Little-Mix-WingsMy overall rating for DNA is a 5 outta 10.  Yeah, they’ve got some catchy stuff, but I’m not going to be rushing out to buy the CD.  I wouldn’t skip them if they came on my Pandora pop station.  I have to say though that they did lose a lot of points with me by including a horrible acoustic version of Fun.’s “We Are Young” on the Deluxe Edition of DNA.  Seriously girls, it’s fine if you want to do something like that at your live shows (after all that song is practically an anthem) but don’t try to make money off a half-ass copy of something so awesome.  My personal distain for that remake aside, I can say that I see Little Mix sticking around for a while.
