Fabrican: Spray Your Clothes On

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Clothes-in-a-Can-Fabrican-Comes-Out-with-Spray-On-Fabric-2You know when you’re in a club or bar and you see that girl whose clothes are so tight they look like they were painted on?  Well that concept soon might not be as far from the truth as we think.  My brother sent me a video of a spray on fabric that fits to the body.  According to the accompanying article, it is the first spray on clothing that can be worn, washed, and worn again.  Manel Torres, a Spanish fashion designer, worked with scientists at Imperial College London to make Fabrican.

fabrican5In concept it sounds really cool and futuristic, right?  But when you think about it, skintight clothes aren’t going to work well for everyone.  While I watched all the videos of them spraying on the fabric I couldn’t help thinking that even I’d actually have to start working out so I could have a model-skinny body that would make this level of tight clothing look good.  The other thing I noticed in a few of the videos was that the spray-on clothes are so tight that they were torn as they were taken off the model.  I imagine that problem is part of why we don’t see clothes in a can on the shelves at any of our stores.

IMG_6399Still problematic as it may be, the idea and technology of it is pretty cool.  And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to spend a few hours playing with some cans to see what weird things I could make out of Fabrican.  The looks that Torres created for the runway with this invention weren’t simply skintight shirts.  Check out the funky looks he achieved for the show.  If we can make spray-on clothes today who knows what other ways of applying fashion are still yet to be discovered?
