Check Out This Tumblr Beautiful Thinkers!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

I’m sure that Something New Daily isn’t the only blog you’re following unless you’re related to me and only reading this one because you love me. (Love you guys too!) I’ve been looking around at other blogs though, partly for entertainment but mostly because I’m always looking for stuff I can steal and warp to fit my style.  Between Tumblr, WordPress, Blogger, and all the other sites out there, it can be a bit overwhelming to search for a blog that you really want to follow regularly, of course not counting the accounts of famous people and bands.  As much as I’d like to be evil and say I’m the only blog worth following, forsake all others and worship me, I simply can’t.  So today I thought I’d recommend a blog that is completely different from this one but brings me so much joy and entertainment, How Do I Put This Gently.

If you haven’t grown to trust me and just immediately open my links by this point I’ll tell you a little about this blog.  The basic idea is posting reaction gifs to everyday situations for the blog’s creator, “a semi-functioning individual navigating higher education with a cocktail in her hand and a tendency to embarrass herself.” As you may have guessed from that quote several of the situations relate to the college lifestyle.  If you’ve graduated already, it’s something that you can reminisce about when you went to college.  Even if you don’t think you’re going to relate to the college-themed posts, there’re still a lot of laughs in store for you.  Check out the first few pages and you won’t have to wonder why this blog placed eighth on Buzzfeed’s 16 Most Popular Tumblrs.  My favorite that I’ve seen so far is from May 20th 2013, “Me when I go for a run.” But I’m sure that will change as I dive deeper into the archives, which is exactly what I’m about to do!

“Me when I go for a run” (I love this one soooo much!)

Jack Reacher VS. Safe Haven

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Safe-HavenI recently had the opportunity to watch two movies that have recently come to the On Demand channel, Jack Reacher and Safe Haven.  Honestly, neither will be joining my DVD collection.  If I had to pick between the two which I’d rather watch on repeat for the rest of my life though, I’d have to say Jack Reacher.  Despite the combined sexiness of Josh Duhamel and David Lyons in one movie, Safe Haven was underwhelming and just too predictable for my taste.  But I’m not a huge Nicholas Sparks fan anyway, even if he can bring in the hotties for his movie casts.

Jack-Reacher-Movie-PosterWasting no more time on the lackluster romance movie, that leaves us with Jack Reacher.  Tom Cruise comes to us in yet another action movie as the smartest man in the room who can also kick anyone’s ass without really breaking his stride. *Spoilers, Sweeties, so many spoilers* The one surprising factor in this movie is that the would-be love interest played by Rosamund Pike doesn’t ever get to act on the occasional sexual tension that is hinted at in the film.  That’s right BTs, Mr. Cruise isn’t out to seduce the beautiful lawyer that asked for his help, he’s only there to find the truth.

Besides the lack of sex, I think the overall conspiracy behind the opening sniper shooting could have been explained a little better.  Instead we simply gain a quick understanding that it’s all about the money.  I guess that’s a good enough reason for an evil plot to kill four innocent bystanders in order to hide the murder of one specific person.  So Reacher follows the clues, gets into fights, and goes on a couple car chases in the classic action movie manor.

Jack-Reacher-Jai-CourtneyMy two biggest disappointments for this movie were in the final scenes.  In the last fistfight for Tom Cruise’s character and the lead henchman played by Jai Courtney there isn’t much of a struggle.  I didn’t even feel that I had to worry for a second about Cruise getting through the fight without any real damage.  The second disappointment came when the “grand master villain” has a chance for escape and doesn’t take it.  When he is first introduced as a character he makes it very clear that he is a survivor by any means, even biting off his own fingers.  But when it’s time for him to run to survive for another day, he sticks around for a bullet to the head.  It felt completely out of character and a little too convenient for wrapping up the movie.  Still, these disappointments aside, Jack Reacher was entertaining enough to justify the On Demand fee.

Fabrican: Spray Your Clothes On

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

Clothes-in-a-Can-Fabrican-Comes-Out-with-Spray-On-Fabric-2You know when you’re in a club or bar and you see that girl whose clothes are so tight they look like they were painted on?  Well that concept soon might not be as far from the truth as we think.  My brother sent me a video of a spray on fabric that fits to the body.  According to the accompanying article, it is the first spray on clothing that can be worn, washed, and worn again.  Manel Torres, a Spanish fashion designer, worked with scientists at Imperial College London to make Fabrican.

fabrican5In concept it sounds really cool and futuristic, right?  But when you think about it, skintight clothes aren’t going to work well for everyone.  While I watched all the videos of them spraying on the fabric I couldn’t help thinking that even I’d actually have to start working out so I could have a model-skinny body that would make this level of tight clothing look good.  The other thing I noticed in a few of the videos was that the spray-on clothes are so tight that they were torn as they were taken off the model.  I imagine that problem is part of why we don’t see clothes in a can on the shelves at any of our stores.

IMG_6399Still problematic as it may be, the idea and technology of it is pretty cool.  And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to spend a few hours playing with some cans to see what weird things I could make out of Fabrican.  The looks that Torres created for the runway with this invention weren’t simply skintight shirts.  Check out the funky looks he achieved for the show.  If we can make spray-on clothes today who knows what other ways of applying fashion are still yet to be discovered?

Suzy Ultman’s Kitchy Cuties

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

il_570xN.306817038Whenever I’m in a place that hangs art for sale on the walls I try to find something that catches my attention.  This isn’t always a successful endeavor, we all have our own sense of good aesthetics after all.  Sometimes I look around thinking, “I hope these people have day jobs.” Every once in a while though I see something that makes me think or even something that just makes me smile.  Suzy Ultman’s print of hot air balloons was one that made me smile.  I found it a few years back on a wall in SoFla for only $6, a fair price for something that makes me happy.  I can’t say I believe that Ultman will ever be one of the greats, but there’s something about the bright colors and big eyes in her prints that draws my attention.

There is a definite kitchy hipster vibe going on in these prints.  I can imagine seeing her stuff available in Urban Outfitters, the store where we can all go to buy originality.  Sarcasm aside, I enjoy Ultman’s paintings of personified objects, like Mr. and Ms. House below. You can find her prints on her Etsy page with prices ranging from $20-60.  Maybe one of these prints is the adorable, affordable touch you need to brighten up a room in your house?  These pics are my favorites currently available from Ultman.

B.o.B’s New Single Needs a Rename

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

bob-rapperI was looking at the New Music section on iTunes once again and I came across a new song called “HeadBand” by B.o.B.  My first thought was “huh?” Followed quickly by “rappers will make songs about anything.” And then that one horrible song from Glee called “My Headband” came to mind so I had to listen to the B.o.B single just to get that song out of my mind.  As I listened I decided that the song would be more appropriately named “Do It in the Mirror” seeing as the word headband is only said once and feels like a completely random title.  Titles aside, if you like the B.o.B song featuring artist 2 Chainz, it might be the first single off his third album.  There hasn’t been much news on the subject of that album since B.o.B asked fans to help him name it via Twitter.  Whether this song is the first off his next album or not though, it’s still good news for all you B.o.B fans out there.  He’s a bit hit-or-miss for me.  Check out the official audio on YouTube and leave me a comment of what you think: B.o.B’s next radio hit or something skippable?

Crazy Cat Post!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

It has been a crazy week and it’s catching up with me today. I’ve really got nothing for you today except a bunch of pics of my cats and my sisters’ cat. They are the cutest. Yes all of them are the cutest. How can every one of these pics be the cutest you ask? “These are questions that keep me up at night on adderall taking pictures of my cat!” (#VeryMaryKateQuotes)

Fred and Friends Making Everything Awesome! (Really Everything.)

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

If you’re anything like me, and I suspect you are if you’re reading this blog, then you love finding that one little thing that adds flare to something ordinary.  Fred & Friends is a company that takes things like mixing pancake batter or serving pasta from ordinary to fabulous.  And that’s just with the Fred Kitchen section.  Fred & Friends specializes in taking the common out of commonplace for spaces of your house like your desk, kitchen, or dining room table.  Everything they make has a cute, young feel to it that makes me repeatedly say, “OMG that’s adorable!” every two minutes or less while I’m on their website.  They don’t sell any of their products directly from their site, but they do have a store locator so you can find a local distributer.  I prefer just hopping on Amazon and adding my favorites to my wish list on there.  If you still need some convincing, here are some of my favorite Fred products.

Mr. Gaiman Bring Me a Dream

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

sandmanI have a list, both physical and in the form of mental notes in back of my head, of books I want to read.  Mine seems like it gets longer every week from friend’s recommendations, roaming around bookstores, and window-shopping on Amazon.  Today I finally got around to reading one that’s been on my list for a while now, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.  Not the whole series of course, but the first volume Preludes & Nocturnes; I have to say that this recommendation didn’t lead me astray.

220px-Gaiman,_Neil_(2007)Gaiman’s more well know for writing novels, a few have gone on to be movies like Stardust and Coraline, but The Sandman brings his writing into the world of comics.  I’m not the type of comic book collector that can’t wait for the next issue of all the classic heroes to come out.  I don’t usually have the money to spend on eight different comics every month, and I still haven’t really looked into finding a shop here in Orlando that I like as much as the one I used to visit in SoFlo.  But I think that this series is one I’ll be following; I’ve got the second volume coming in the mail soon. (Yay for cheaper prices online!)

As you’ve probably guessed from the title, the main character of this series is the sandman/king of dreams/every other name that he goes by. (Seriously, they call him like ten different things just in the first volume.) It starts off a little slow, after the black magic ritual there is a bit of waiting around while time passes.  I suppose that jumping through decades is a good way to show the reader that our main character is immortal, the living embodiment of an idea that doesn’t age.  The first two sections are a lot of background knowledge that you’ll need as you read on, but the real action starts in the third section of volume one: we start to see the powers of the protagonist as he begins his first story arch to regain his strength.

15051_900x1350I love the dark nature of the storyline and the way that Gaiman brings together characters from all sorts of religions, stories, and other comics without it feeling like they are out of place.  The Sandman belongs to the DC comic realm so there are appearances from some classic characters like Martian Manhunter and Batman’s villain Scarecrow.  However there’s minimal interaction with them in this book, it’s just nice to see that the story embraces the long-standing tradition of comic book crossovers.  My favorite moment though was the Sandman’s journey through hell.  Not every character gets a chance to go up against the devil.  I can’t wait to see what is in store for the King of Dreams in the next volume.

Kellan Lutz and My Newest Level of Celebrity Crushing!

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

kellan-lutz11Most, if not all, of us have celebrity crushes.  Whether they’re just “oh yeah what a hottie” or “I’m hiding in the bushes taking pics, I’ll call you back” level crushes depends on your sanity of course.  I’ve never been one for bushes (too many bugs and other creepy crawlies) but I have found a new level for myself.  I call it the “I hate every movie I’ve seen you in but all that’s forgiven when you smile” level.  This new level of celebrity crush is in use for Kellan Lutz.  He’s best known for his role in the Twilight Saga (I think I lost a little piece of my soul just typing that), but I first saw him in that one episode of Heroes that played out an alternate future with the villain as president.

91Y2ZoWPl3L._AA1500_Last night I was scrolling through Netflix when I came across a movie called Arena.  I’m not gonna lie, it looks like the basic action flick when you see the movie poster and that’s pretty much what it is.  It’s the gladiator scenario set in modern times so of course the fights are viewed over the Internet instead of in an actual arena.  Samuel L. Jackson stars as the ringleader villain-in-charge of the whole operation who kidnaps men that show potential for the fights.  Like every gladiator-esque movie goes, he’s kidnapped the wrong person when Kellan Lutz’s character gets dragged into the ring.

vlcsnap-2011-12-12-20h58m22s69I can’t say I was captivated by the story or anything like that.  If I’m being honest I only kept watching because they continued to have scenes where our protagonist was missing a shirt. (Yum!) While I watched though I came up with a few different drinking game rules.  If you’re already enjoying the movie maybe you won’t need them, but if you’re not, here they are:

Drink (responsibly!)every time:

  •  Kellan Lutz is shirtless
  • He gets hit with a taser
  • A head gets cut off
  • Samuel L. Jackson kisses an Asian girl
  • They show the college students/Asian office workers
  • If you laugh when Jackson and the Asian girls are dancing during the montage of fights

arena-300In all seriousness, unless you’re a fan of the action movie genre or you share my fascination with Kellan Lutz this movie isn’t really worth your time. *Spoilers* It’s definitely not the stand-out example of the gladiator plot line, even with the twist that the protagonist is trying to become a fighter the whole time because he is an undercover agent that’s trying to bring the fighting ring down.  I can’t say I’m disappointed since I didn’t have high expectations in the first place, but I’m not going to be adding this one to my DVD collection.  Still, I’ll keep giving Kellan Lutz movies a chance if for nothing else than to see his gorgeous smile.

The Shorts and Suit Jacket Combo

Hello Beautiful Thinkers,

If you live anywhere close to a beach you know it’s getting to be that time of year again.  Yes, swim suits and shorts will be dominating style choices as so many of us rush off to make sand castles, work on our tans, and once again try to figure out how to use a boogie board. (Sans the tanning for me, I’m a SPF 50 million kind of guy) Break out your cute floppy hats and brightly colored beach towels Beautiful Thinkers and hit the water now that it’s not so cold you feel like you’re going to reenact Leonardo DiCaprio’s death scene from Titanic.

Being a Florida boy born and raised I’m no stranger to the beach, but since I live in Orlando now I’m finding it a little harder to get to with it being about a 45 minute drive either direction before you hit water.  That might not seem like a big deal to some of you, but when you’re from SoFlo where the beach is basically right outside your back door 45 minutes can feel like a Lord of the Rings journey.  Thankfully I just spent the weekend back south where I got inspired for the rant I’m about to go on. (Incoming shift in tone.)

shorts-for-men-with-blue-blazer-2013More and more I’m seeing the style of shorts and a suit jacket together.  I’m not sure who thought this particular combo was a good idea for Men’s Fashion but I have the desire to torture them both physically and mentally.  Seriously, don’t point this person out to me because I’ll probably find a way to go full on Hulk and fling them around like Loki in The Avengers.  Every instance of this outfit combo has made me think that the person wearing it has a desperate need to revert back to a time when they went to a private all boys’ boarding school.

1c1ba478a8c3eb416e6329c6af9e7114I know that I may be a little bit biased when it comes to this fashion topic, being a man that only owns one pair of shorts and only wears them when absolutely everything else needs to be put through the wash.  Still, I can’t say I’m completely overreacting to the ridiculousness of this style.  Come on guys, if it’s warm enough outside for shorts that jacket is probably overkill.  No matter how sexy the man wearing it is, I’ve found that no one has the magic to make this look work in my mind.  Even this sexily scruffed gentleman with his nice shades is completely failing to do anything for me while wearing this ridiculous look.  Join me in shunning the shorts/suit jacket combo BTs, and hope for something less unpleasant next summer.
